The Agribusiness Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara, held an Alumni Gathering event themed Celebrate the Past, Embrace the Present, and Build the Future based on characteristic values, commitment, and integrity on Saturday, 20th January 2024, at Cambridge Hotel Medan, Medan. This event is a platform for alumni to reunite and an effort from Universitas Sumatera Utara, Faculty of Agriculture, and the Agribusiness Study Program to transform education towards internationalization, as of linking and matching with the current Business and Industrial World.
The USU Agribusiness Study Program, established in 1957, focuses on teaching Agricultural business and economics and has produced outstanding alumni who hold vital positions in different fields such as agriculture/plantation, bureaucracy, academia, research, entrepreneurship, and various other fields, both in Indonesia and abroad. Alumni will significantly contribute to the development of the alma mater, as well as to the nation and country. The condition and the presence of alumni, as well as their achievements, are crucial to be showcased as an indicator of the success of the study program in producing high-quality graduates.
During the Alumni Gathering for Campus Internationalization, alumni from occupational backgrounds attended the event ,along with lecturers from the study program, who are also alumni. It recorded that the distribution of occupational industries is government, banking, plantation, fisheries, processed food, education, and property. Additionally, several other alumni have ventured into entrepreneurship and consulting.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, M.S., Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, who is an alumnus of the Agribusiness Study Program at the Faculty Of Agriculture of Universitas Sumatera Utara, stated that the support of alumni is needed to achieve international accreditation and the University's Key Performance Indicator target to gain a broad international recognition.
Dr. Rulianda Purnomo Wibowo, S.P., M.Ec., the head of the Agribusiness Study Program at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara, added that there are several criteria for achieving international accreditation in improving teaching standards, human resources, as well as facilities and infrastructure of the study program and university.
Practitioner Alumni can give insight into the gap between the world of education and the workforce. For that reason, through the involvement of the alumni, the USU Agribusiness Study Program can provide in-depth insight into many relevant learning standards as the stepping stone toward international accreditation. Furthermore, in USU’s equity program, alumni’s contribution will strengthen the university’s internationalization. The goal of internationalization and equity is to ensure that graduates of USU have high competitiveness in the future.
Wasudewan, S.P., M.M., CEO 99 Group Indonesia, alumni from the USU Agribusiness Study Program class of 2000, and winner of USU Alumni Awards in 2023 for entrepreneurship alumni nomination said a lot of competition gained by the alumni in the workforce that valuable to share among the future graduates in the university in order to spark their productivity when entering the workforce.
A discussion session with the alumni produced a few conclusion points about hard skill and soft skill that are required for graduates when joining the Business and Industrial World. According to the alumni, hard skill that becomes top priority is business or entrepreneurship, then come management as well as communication. Meanwhile, soft skills that are required are the ability to solve complex problems, analyze systems, the ability of persuasive and negotiation approaches, creativity, originality, and initiative. Alumni association is considered the best means to strengthen communication with fellow alumni. Therefore, this gathering event is a formation for the establishment of the Alumni of the Agribusiness Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, University Sumatera Utara.
