The USU Faculty of Agriculture visited Regal Spring Indonesia (RSI) in Toba to monitor student internship programs and enhance collaboration in sustainable tilapia aquaculture. The visit included site and lab tours, and discussions on future research and guest lecture initiatives.

The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) conducted a visit to the Farming Unit of Regal Spring Indonesia (RSI) in Ajibata Subdistrict, Toba Regency, on Monday, July 28. The visit served as part of the monitoring and evaluation of the internship program for students of the Aquatic Resources Management (MSP) study program and to strengthen the partnership between USU and RSI.

The delegation was led by Dean Prof. Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, MS, accompanied by Vice Dean III Prof. Dr. Ir. Elisa Julianti, M.Si, Head of MSP Program Desrita, S.Pi., M.Si., MSP lecturers, the Head of Cooperation Division, and Dean’s Expert Staff. The team was warmly welcomed by the RSI management.

The visit began with a presentation on Regal Spring Indonesia’s profile and operations, particularly regarding their tilapia aquaculture unit in Lake Toba. The USU team was then invited to tour two key sites—Pangambatan and Sirungkungon—to observe firsthand the sustainable tilapia farming practices.

Friska S. Saragih, Lake Manager of RSI, emphasized sustainability as the company’s core principle.

“We conduct regular monitoring of water and sediment quality. This is essential to maintain the ecosystem and ensure responsible farming. RSI is proud to be the world’s first ASC-certified tilapia producer,” she explained.

The USU team also visited RSI’s laboratory facilities used for monitoring environmental quality in aquaculture. The visit concluded with a discussion on potential collaborative programs between RSI and FP USU, including joint research, public lectures, and scientific data development.

Prof. Tavi Supriana welcomed the collaboration initiatives.

“We see many opportunities to develop partnerships, particularly in sustainability. We could initiate joint research that leads to scientific publications and even creates data foundations for policy-making at RSI,” she said.

This visit demonstrated the USU Faculty of Agriculture’s commitment to bridging academia and industry, while also supporting the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program through real-world internship and field research experiences.
