The community service team from the Faculty of Agriculture USU held a training session on organic NPK fertilizer production in Bekiung Village, Langkat, aimed at improving community welfare and reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers. The training also promotes the application of appropriate technology in the agricultural sector.

In an effort to support the improvement of community welfare and encourage the use of environmentally friendly technology, a community service team from the Faculty of Agriculture at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) conducted an appropriate technology application activity in Bekiung Village, Langkat District. This activity aims to provide sustainable solutions to the excessive use of chemical fertilizers in the agricultural sector.

This initiative is part of the Community Partnership Empowerment program, carried out by a team led by Dr. Hafnes Wahyuni, S.P., M.P., as the team leader, with two other members, R.B. Moh. Ibrahim Fatoni, S.Pi., M.P., and Rahmatika Alfi, S.P., M.Si. The program aims to educate the local community on how to produce organic NPK fertilizer using natural materials available around them.

In this program, the people of Bekiung Village were taught how to process organic materials into NPK fertilizer that can improve soil fertility and agricultural yields. This fertilizer production method is not only more environmentally friendly but also more economical and helps reduce dependence on increasingly expensive chemical fertilizers.

The process of making organic NPK fertilizer introduced to the village community involves several stages, starting from selecting the right raw materials, mixing organic materials, to the fermentation process that requires patience. All of these processes are explained in an easy-to-understand manner, so that the community can implement them independently at home.

With this training, it is hoped that the farmers in Bekiung Village can utilize the knowledge they have gained to improve the quality of their agricultural products while maintaining environmental sustainability. The activity also aims to strengthen the relationship between academia and the community and raise awareness about the importance of using more sustainable organic fertilizers in agriculture.

Through this community service, the Faculty of Agriculture USU hopes to make a tangible contribution to the advancement of the agricultural sector in Langkat District, as well as create beneficial solutions for the community in improving their welfare through the application of appropriate and environmentally friendly technology.
