The Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Faculty of Agriculture at Universitas Sumatera Utara held a community service event in Karang Anyar Village, Pegajahan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, on Saturday, February 15, 2025. This event was organized to commemorate National Waste Awareness Day, featuring a series of seminars and workshops on transforming waste into ecobricks and compost. The innovation theme was Household Waste Management to Improve Agricultural and Environmental Quality.
The event was attended by Muhammad Adanan Purba, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., a lecturer from the Faculty of Agriculture; Muhammad Rofiqul Firdaus Siregar, Chairman of BEM FP USU; Muzammil Ihsan, Chairman of BEM USU; Muhammad Heri Sukandar, Head of Karang Anyar Village; Iswan Kaputra, the event’s guest speaker; members of the Karang Anyar Village Women’s Association (PKK); and students from the Faculty of Agriculture at USU.
This community service initiative aimed to promote proper waste management within the local community to help mitigate environmental impacts.
The seminar concluded with a Q&A session with Iswan Kaputra from BITRA. In his presentation, he explained the negative effects of waste on climate change, air pollution, and harmful gas emissions that could pose health risks to humans.
Additionally, the event included workshops on making ecobricks and compost. The community service program continued with the donation of trash bins, crafted by USU’s Faculty of Agriculture students, to Karang Anyar Village. Furthermore, BEM and the Faculty of Agriculture students carried out environmental sanitation activities around the village.
It is hoped that positive initiatives like this will become a regular agenda for all student organizations within the Faculty of Agriculture at USU, allowing students to continue making meaningful contributions to society.
