Horticulture is one of the agricultural fields that requires both technical understanding and direct field experience. Through the Learning Outside the Study Program (PLPS), students of the Undergraduate Program in Agrotechnology, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FP USU), had the opportunity to learn directly at the Gedung Johor Main Horticultural Seed Unit.

The PLPS activity provided students with an opportunity to become familiar with various activities carried out in the horticultural work environment. Students were able to observe the application of knowledge and technology in supporting agricultural activities while understanding work processes related to horticultural plant management. This experience formed part of the learning process that connected academic knowledge with actual conditions in the field.

Direct involvement during the activity also provided students with opportunities to apply the knowledge they had acquired during their studies. Various field activities enriched students' understanding of plant cultivation techniques and management while introducing them to the dynamics of work involved in the development of horticultural commodities. In addition to providing practical experience, this activity also supported the development of students' technical skills and competencies. The work environment encountered during the PLPS served as a valuable experience for students to understand workforce requirements while building readiness to face developments in the agricultural sector.

The experience is expected to broaden students' insights into the application of agrotechnology and encourage the development of graduates with the competencies and adaptability needed to face various challenges in the agricultural sector. Learning in the field, developing competencies, and preparing a generation for sustainable agriculture.
