Asahan, July 27, 2026 – Lecturers of the Undergraduate Program in Agrotechnology, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), conducted supervision of students' Field Work Practice (PKL) at PTPN IV Regional 1 Sei Silau Plantation, Sei Silau Village, Buntu Pane District, Asahan Regency, North Sumatra Province. The supervision was conducted by PKL supervisor Nahrisa Rahmadhani, S.Agr., M.Si., as part of monitoring and evaluating the implementation of students' PKL in the field. Through this PKL, students had the opportunity to apply knowledge gained from lectures while directly learning about plant management on a plantation scale.
During the PKL, students were involved in various plantation activities, ranging from nursery activities and plant maintenance through fertilization and spraying of the plant circle, to harvesting. Students also gained experience in pest observation and control, including the use of light traps to monitor the presence of insects as part of the implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles. In addition, students conducted vegetative measurements of plants to objectively observe plant conditions and growth. This series of activities provided practical experience while strengthening students' understanding of plant cultivation and management in the field.
PKL serves as practice-based learning that connects theory with real conditions in the field, while training students to conduct observations, record findings, and understand various issues in plantation management. Supervision by the lecturer also ensured that the activities were carried out in accordance with the learning objectives through direct discussions and evaluations regarding students' experiences, challenges, and skills acquired. This experience serves as preparation for developing technical, observation, problem-solving, and professional skills as prospective graduates in the fields of agriculture and plantations.
The implementation of PKL at PTPN IV Regional 1 Sei Silau Plantation also supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) through experiential learning, SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) through strengthening students' skills and readiness to enter the workforce, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration between Universitas Sumatera Utara and PTPN IV Regional 1 in supporting student learning and competency development.
