The Undergraduate Program in Agrotechnology, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara, held an International General Lecture on “The Effectiveness of Beneficial Plants in Attracting Beneficial Insects” featuring Dr. Salmah Mohamed from UniSZA, Malaysia. The event highlighted the vital role of beneficial plants in supporting sustainable agriculture and fostering cross-border scientific collaboration.

The Undergraduate Program in Agrotechnology, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FP USU), successfully held an International Guest Lecture entitled “The Effectiveness of Beneficial Plants in Attracting Beneficial Insects” on Thursday, June 26, 2025, via the Zoom Meeting platform.

The lecture featured Dr. Salmah Mohamed, Ph.D., from the School of Agriculture Science and Biotechnology, Faculty of Bioresource and Food Industry, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Malaysia, as the keynote speaker. Serving as moderator was Amelia Zuliyanti Siregar, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., a lecturer at the Undergraduate Program in Agrotechnology, FP USU.

The event was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture USU, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, M.S., the Head and Secretary of the Agrotechnology Program, lecturers, students, and general participants from various backgrounds.

In her opening remarks, Prof. Tavi expressed appreciation for the implementation of this event. “I would like to extend my utmost respect and gratitude to Dr. Salmah for her willingness to share knowledge with us this morning. Congratulations to all of us, and may this event provide insight and benefits for everyone.”

Meanwhile, the Head of the Agrotechnology Program, Dr. Nini Rahmawati, S.P., M.Si., stated that the topic is highly relevant to promoting more environmentally friendly agricultural practices. “Today’s guest lecture topic is highly meaningful in our efforts toward more sustainable agricultural practices. Understanding how to enhance crop protection and natural pollination through plant-insect interactions is crucial and aligns with our academic mission to connect science with real-world applications.”

In her presentation, Dr. Salmah emphasized the essential role of beneficial plants in the agricultural ecosystem. “Beneficial plants play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem balance and sustainability, increasing biodiversity, supporting good agricultural practices, and promoting food security.”

This event is expected to raise awareness and interest among the academic community and the general public in continuously developing sustainable and ecology-based farming practices. The Undergraduate Program in Agrotechnology, FP USU, will continue to encourage the organization of similar scientific activities as a platform for knowledge exchange, innovation, and collaboration at both national and international levels for the advancement of environmentally friendly and globally competitive agriculture in Indonesia.
