The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held an International Guest Lecture titled “Precision Nutrition & Feed Innovation: Shaping The Future of Tropical Livestock Systems” featuring Dr. Nor Dini Binti Rusli from University Kelantan Malaysia to discuss precision technology applications for sustainable tropical livestock systems.

The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), through the Undergraduate Program in Animal Science and the Master’s Programs in Animal Science and Food Science, held an International Guest Lecture titled “Precision Nutrition & Feed Innovation: Shaping The Future of Tropical Livestock Systems” on Friday, October 24, 2025, virtually via Zoom Meeting.

The event featured Dr. Nor Dini Binti Rusli, Lecturer at the Faculty of Agro-Based Industry, University Kelantan Malaysia, as the guest speaker, and Vivi Indriani, S.Pt., M.Si., Lecturer of the Animal Science Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, USU, as the moderator.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Dr. Ir. Nevy Diana Hanafi, S.Pt., M.Si., IPM., Head of the Master’s Program in Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, USU, stated that this lecture was a valuable opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of precision nutrition and feed innovation within tropical livestock systems.

“Students, today we welcome our guest speaker, Dr. Dini, a lecturer from University Malaysia Kelantan. She will discuss the potential of nutrition and feed innovation in shaping the future of tropical livestock systems. The term ‘precision’ here refers to the accuracy, consistency, and measurable standards expected for tropical livestock management,” said Dr. Nevy.

In her presentation, Dr. Nor Dini Binti Rusli explained key aspects of precision technology application in modern livestock systems, particularly in tropical regions. She highlighted how technologies such as Automatic Feeding Systems can enhance precision and efficiency in feed delivery while offering both economic and environmental benefits.

Additionally, she elaborated on the implementation of Precision Livestock Farming (PLF), which enables real-time monitoring of animal conditions integrated with sustainable farming practices. The concept of Precision Animal Nutrition (PAN) was introduced as an approach to optimize nutrient utilization through proper feed additives and processing, while Precision Feeding (PF) emphasized the importance of nutrient balance supported by modern technologies.

Furthermore, Dr. Nor Dini discussed the challenges of implementing precision technologies in the tropical livestock sector, which still faces economic and technical barriers. “Further research and collaboration are essential to ensure these technologies can be widely adopted and deliver tangible benefits for the sustainability of livestock systems,” she remarked.

The event took place with great enthusiasm. Participants actively engaged in an interactive discussion and Q&A session with the speaker. Various insightful questions were raised concerning the challenges of implementing precision technologies in the field and opportunities for international research collaboration.

The lecture was attended by students and lecturers from various study programs within the USU Faculty of Agriculture who actively participated from start to finish. Through this event, it is expected that the academic community of the USU Faculty of Agriculture can broaden their knowledge of innovative approaches in animal nutrition and feed development while strengthening international academic collaboration between USU and University Kelantan Malaysia.
