Medan, August 14, 2026 — The Faculty of Agriculture at Universitas Sumatera Utara (FP USU) held the 2026 Introduction to Campus Life for New Students (Pengenalan Kehidupan Kampus bagi Mahasiswa Baru/PKKMB) from August 12–14, 2026. Held at the USU Student Hall, the program was attended by 931 new students from six study programs within FP USU.
PKKMB serves as an initial stage for new students to become familiar with the university environment, academic culture, education system, faculty governance, and various student activities. The program also serves as a means of character development, enabling students to adapt to university life, develop a sense of responsibility, and actively develop their academic and non-academic potential.
The program began on Wednesday (August 12), following the university-level PKKMB opening ceremony led by the Rector of USU at Lapangan Kembar. The new students were then transported to the Student Hall to participate in the faculty-level activities.
On the first day, new students were introduced to the FP USU leadership, heads and secretaries of the study programs, as well as various faculty activities and achievements. The Dean of FP USU, Dr. Rulianda Purnomo Wibowo, S.P., M.Ec., also delivered a welcoming address and presentation on the Faculty of Agriculture at USU.
The activities continued with several sessions covering national character development, global leadership, national defense awareness, educational transformation in the 21st century, developments in higher education in the digital era and Society 5.0, as well as character development oriented toward global competitiveness. These sessions provided students with an initial understanding of the role of higher education in addressing global changes and challenges.
The second day, Thursday (August 13), focused on strengthening students’ understanding of academic life and their role in development through sessions on Impactful Campuses (Kampus Berdampak) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Students also received information about the Student Achievement Center (Puspresma), the library, academic integrity and ethics, as well as preparedness for violence and disasters.
The second day also featured speakers from Bank Indonesia and the North Sumatra Provincial Agriculture and Food Security Agency. The participation of external speakers provided students with insights into economic developments, the agricultural sector, and the opportunities and challenges facing young people in development. The activities continued with an introduction to the six study programs within FP USU: Agrotechnology, Agribusiness, Food Technology, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Aquatic Resources Management, and Animal Science.
On the third day, Friday (August 14), new students were introduced to various organizations and platforms for personal development within FP USU. These included Departmental Student Associations (HMJ), Student Activity Units (UKM), the Faculty Student Representative Council, and the Faculty Student Executive Board (BEM).
Students also received information about the Student Creativity Program (PKM) and insights from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG). The program became even more engaging with student musical performances and entertainment before concluding with the faculty-level PKKMB closing ceremony. The students were then transported to Lapangan Kembar to attend the university-level PKKMB closing ceremony.
The 2026 FP USU PKKMB was conducted smoothly and received enthusiastic participation from the new students. In addition to providing an initial understanding of campus life and academic culture, the program also served as a space for building togetherness, solidarity, and social awareness, while encouraging students to actively contribute to the university and wider community.
The PKKMB implementation is also aligned with the spirit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, through the provision of knowledge and initial orientation toward inclusive, high-quality, and relevant higher education. The development of character, integrity, literacy, creativity, and adaptability throughout the program also contributes to developing a younger generation equipped with the competencies needed to contribute to sustainable development.
Furthermore, the participation of Bank Indonesia, the North Sumatra Provincial Agriculture and Food Security Agency, and BMKG in the program reflects the importance of collaboration between higher education institutions and various stakeholders. This is aligned with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through the strengthening of networks and collaboration to support education and student capacity development.
With the knowledge and experience gained over the three-day program, new FP USU students are expected to actively and responsibly navigate their university experience, develop their academic and non-academic potential, and become a generation that is character-driven, innovative, and capable of contributing to sustainable agricultural development.
