North Sumatra Goat and Sheep Livestock Contest

IMAPET of the Faculty of Agriculture USU held a goat and sheep livestock contest at USU with 48 participating farms, various competition categories, and an educational series of events on December 3, 2023.

On Sunday, December 3, 2023, the Animal Husbandry Student Association (IMAPET) of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), organized a goat and sheep livestock contest in North Sumatra. The contest was held at the Faculty of Agriculture USU under the theme "Creating Excellent Livestock in North Sumatra."


This event was attended by Dr. Ir. Ma'ruf Tafsin, M.Si., IPM, the Head of the Animal Husbandry Study Program, Ir. Achmad Sadeli, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPM., ASEAN.Eng., the Secretary of the Animal Husbandry Study Program, and Prof. Dr. Ir. Elisa Julianti, M.Si., the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Agriculture USU, who officially opened the event. Students from several universities, such as Universitas Panca Budi, Universitas HKBP Nommensen, and Universitas Tjuk Nyak Dien, also attended and helped enliven the event.


The livestock contest event included several activities, one of which was a talk show presented by Pirgok Panggaben, the Head of the Planning and Sustainability Division of PTPN4, and Dr. Andi Tarigan, S.Pt., M.Si., an animal feed expert and researcher at BRIN, who is also a consultant for the Animal Feed Development Program at PTPN4.


The goat and sheep contest was participated by 48 farms with a total of 65 livestock from Medan, Tebing Tinggi, Tanjung Balai, Stabat Langkat, Hamparan Perak, Dolok Masihul, Berastagi, and Riau. The contest included 6 categories:

  1. Extreme Sheep Category
  2. Extreme Goat Category
  3. Category A PE Male
  4. Category B PE Male
  5. Category C/D PE Male
  6. Category C/D PE Female
     

A total of 18 winners were awarded trophies, certificates, cash prizes, various goods, and feed sponsored by PTPN4.
At the end of the event, the participating farmers expressed hope that such activities could be held annually. Besides motivating them to improve their livestock quality, the event also served as a platform for farmers to network and share information and experiences.
