The Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), represented by the Vice Rector 3, Prof. Dr. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt, has agreed to establish a partnership between Universitas Sumatera Utara and Wageningen University at the Atlas Building, Wageningen University & Research (WUR), Netherlands. During this visit, Vice Rector 3 USU was accompanied by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, MS. Prof. Poppy added that on February 23, 2023, a research discussion was initiated between a faculty member (Dr. Diana Chalil) and Dr. Maja Slingerland (WUR) regarding sustainable palm oil in Jakarta.

The visit lasted for 4 days from March 7 to March 10, 2023. During this visit, USU participated as one of the Indonesian delegations in WISE (Wageningen-Indonesia Scientific Exposure) with the theme “Towards High Quality Indonesian Agricultural and Life Sciences Research Through Multidisciplinary Collaborations”. The event was also attended by delegations from Syah Kuala University (USK), Andalas University (UNAND), Riau University (UNRI), Jambi University, LPDP, Directorate General of Higher Education, and BRIN. All delegations agreed to establish a consortium for research collaboration involving these four universities with WUR (Wageningen University of Research).

The event was facilitated by the Education and Culture Attaché of the Republic of Indonesia in The Hague, Netherlands, Dr. Agus Setiabudi, M.Si. Vice Rector III USU hopes that with this collaboration with WUR, more research collaborations between USU researchers and WUR researchers will be established.

In the roundtable meeting, several topics were discussed, including sustainable protein production (economic sustainability, livelihoods, environmental conservation, both marine, terrestrial, and social environments). The development of a strong Indonesian agricultural chain connecting regional agricultural production to markets, improving food security, and equitable production and distribution. Also, preparedness for epidemics and pandemics aimed at effective (cost) monitoring, and other topics.

Potential collaboration programs between USU and WUR include joint research collaboration. As a prominent university in Agriculture and Forestry, USU is proud to have the opportunity for this research collaboration. Several research topics offered at the meeting include agribusiness, agronomy, crop breeding, soil science, plant protection, food technology, agricultural technology and biosystems, livestock, and aquatic resource management. Additionally, other potential collaborations could include joint student supervision, double degrees, summer courses, and international conferences. This collaboration is expected to enhance the quality of research, education, and international conferences, allowing USU to enhance its capacity for international competitiveness.
