The Youth Scientific Group (KIR) of SMAN 1 Medan visited the USU Faculty of Agriculture on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. The locations visited by KIR SMAN 1 Medan at the USU Faculty of Agriculture are Pest Laboratory, Disease Laboratory, Food Microbiology Laboratory, Gauze House, and Teaching Farm.
Mr. Indra Rahmadi, S.Si, M.Si, the KIR Supervisor, conveyed the purpose of this educational visit: to get to know research equipment for supporting research mechanisms with innovation and appropriate technology. Mr. Indra also mentioned, "Occasionally, refreshing is needed to refresh the interest and motivation of students in finding ideas and innovations when making scientific and research work," said the KIR Supervisor of SMAN 1 Medan.
The Principal of SMAN 1 Medan supported this activity through the Vice Principal of Student Affairs and the Vice Principal of Facilities of SMAN 1 Medan by facilitating the provision of school buses as a means of transportation and granting permission for students to travel to the USU Faculty of Agriculture.

In his remarks, the Dean of the USU Faculty of Agriculture, represented by the Head of Administration of the USU Faculty of Agriculture, received the arrival of the KIR group of SMA Negeri 1 Medan, which totaled 15 people, in the Meeting Room of the Main Building, USU Faculty of Agriculture, Jl. Dr. A. Sofyan No. 3, Medan at 14.15 WIB. He also expressed his gratitude for the visit of the KIR SMAN 1 Medan group. He hoped students would be interested in enrolling at the Universitas Sumatera Utara, especially the USU Faculty of Agriculture.
Laboratory visits were carried out and received by the Head of the Pest Laboratory of the USU Faculty of Agriculture, Ameilia Zuliyanti Siregar, M.Sc, Ph.D who explained the laboratory facilities, consisting of a literacy corner, gauze house, Insect Teaching and Research Collection (ITRC), plant clinic, Teaching Farm, and audiovisual studio.
Furthermore, the making of biosaka by the Plant Clinic Management (Klintan) from a combination of several grasses (weeds), the procedure for preserving insects, and the use of IT (Expert System) to support pest checks on plants.
Meanwhile, the Plant Disease Laboratory, through the Laboran, Mrs. Pinde, explained the division of laboratory rooms, procedures for diagnosing and detecting plant diseases, and the use of several tools such as microscopes, petri dishes, incubators, etc.
Then, the KIR group visited the Food Microbiology Laboratory, checking microorganisms under a microscope and introducing the tests carried out there.
Then, the KIR group visited a screen house planted with corn, rice, and Solanaceae, teaching the farming partnership between FP USU and Pokhpan in providing broiler chickens for the market and the community in Medan City.
Before returning home, students took the time to take pictures together in the lotus pond of the USU Faculty of Agriculture, in front of the USU Auditorium, and in front of the USU Bureuau of Rector, followed by feeding the deer.
The activity went smoothly, and the KIR SMAN 1 Medan group enjoyed visiting the Universitas Sumatera Utara.
"Tired of walking in the sun's heat during the day checking the gauze house, teaching farm, and playing with deer, but the heart is happy because we get a lot of info about laboratories and USU," said Fayza Keumala Rizkya.
"Hopefully, this activity is useful for students, especially KIR SMAN 1 Medan, and the results of KIR SMAN 1 Medan's research are more creative, innovative, and can contribute to society," said Mr. Indra, closing the afternoon meeting when dropping off students to be picked up by their parents at SMAN 1 Medan.
