The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), in collaboration with the Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), successfully conducted the Scientific Expedition: Bioquest @ North Sumatera Indonesia from September 8 to October 4, 2025. This event was a series of collaborative programs encompassing a summer course, joint lectures, community service, and a scientific expedition across North Sumatra.
The program officially opened virtually on September 8–9, 2025, with the Summer Course Programme, featuring a guest lecture and a research methodology session titled “Descriptive Research” delivered by Prof. Dr. Lisnawita, S.P., M.Si., from the Faculty of Agriculture, USU. The session was attended by Agrotechnology students from USU and participants from UPM.
The activities continued on September 30, 2025, with an Opening Ceremony and Sharing Session between the leadership teams of USU Faculty of Agriculture and UPM. Participants also joined a campus tour visiting several facilities such as laboratories and faculty areas.
In her opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Lisnawita, S.P., M.Si., Vice Dean I of the Faculty of Agriculture, USU, expressed her gratitude for the visit of the UPM delegation and hoped for a successful collaboration.
“We would like to thank Prof. Nur Ain, Dr. Aini, and all UPM students who have come a long way here. We hope the activities over these few days run smoothly and leave a positive impression of Medan City,” said Prof. Lisnawita.
Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nur Ain Izzati from the Faculty of Science, UPM, expressed appreciation for the warm welcome from USU.
“UPM is very grateful for the positive reception from USU Faculty of Agriculture. We are open to strengthening research collaboration and academic activities between the two universities,” said Prof. Nur Ain.

On October 1, 2025, the program continued with an International Community Service activity with the Indonesian Farmers Union group in Sei Rotan at Pasar 8 Pajak Gambir, Sei Rotan Village, as well as a city tour to several landmarks in Medan City, including Maimun Palace and the Grand Mosque.
On October 2, 2025, USU and UPM students attended joint lectures titled Domestication of Fish by Dr. Noraini Abu Bakar from UPM and Gymnospermae–Angiospermae by Hafnes Wahyuni, S.P., M.P. from USU.
The following day, October 3, 2025, featured a Students’ Expedition consisting of a bazaar and poster exhibition at the USU Faculty of Agriculture, which concluded with the closing ceremony and announcement of winners. The same day also included joint lectures on Plant–Microbe Interactions by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nur Ain Izzati and Fish Resource Management by Dr. Noraini Abu Bakar.
As the final activity, on October 4, 2025, participants went on a Scientific Field Trip to Lake Toba and joined collaborative sessions with USU academic clubs.
The Scientific Expedition: Bioquest @ North Sumatera Indonesia served as a platform for knowledge exchange, academic network strengthening, and the development of research and community engagement between Universitas Sumatera Utara and Universiti Putra Malaysia.
