The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), successfully held The 3rd Talenta Agricultural Summer Course 2025 on September 8–12, 2025, at the DH Penny Agriculture Building. This international-scale event was attended by 228 participants from nine countries and featured 19 speakers from various institutions, focusing on issues of sustainable agriculture, food security, and climate change challenges.

The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), officially opened The 3rd Talenta Agricultural Summer Course 2025 with the theme “Promoting Sustainable Agriculture to Ensure Food Security in the Face of Climate Change” on Tuesday (9/8/2025) at the DH Penny Agriculture Building.

This international event was attended by 228 participants from nine countries, namely Indonesia, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Pakistan, Myanmar, Cambodia, Yemen, Sudan, Thailand, and Nigeria. The participants included undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, lecturers, and practitioners from 26 universities.

The program, held on September 8–12, 2025, combined public lectures, group discussions, poster presentations, and field visits. The event was coordinated by the Agrotechnology and Food Technology Study Programs of the USU Faculty of Agriculture.

The Head of the Committee, Prof. Dr. Ir. Elisa Julianti, M.Si., stated that this activity served as a platform to enhance students’ understanding of global issues in agriculture, food, and sustainability.

“This program not only enriches theoretical insights into agriculture but also raises awareness of global issues such as community welfare, food security, and sustainability,” said Prof. Elisa.

The lecture series took place over two days (September 8–9), featuring 19 international speakers from various institutions. They came from institutions such as Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (Thailand), Dongguk University (South Korea), University of Rajashi (Bangladesh), as well as practitioners from Socfin Group and Pachira Group. Topics discussed included innovations in agricultural product processing, waste management with Black Soldier Flies (BSF), Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and the role of green banking in sustainable development.

In addition to classroom sessions, participants also joined field activities on September 10–12 at several agricultural companies in North Sumatra, including PT Kreasi Lutvi Sejahtera (cassava processing industry), PT Bibit Baru (passion fruit processing), Kilang Tahu Aguan, and Berastagi Fruit Market. For the first time, the summer course also included community service activities, allowing local partners to directly benefit.

The Head of the Agrotechnology Study Program, Dr. Nini Rahmawati, S.P., M.Si., emphasized that this program was not merely ceremonial but also aimed at building long-term research collaborations.

“We hope that after this event, real academic and research collaborations will emerge. In fact, Implementation Agreements have already been signed with the universities of the invited speakers,” explained Dr. Nini.

Participants of the summer course gained various benefits, including credit transfer equivalent to 2 credits, e-certificates, practical experience in the agricultural sector, and opportunities to expand their international networks.

This program also aligned with USU’s support for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The 3rd Talenta Agricultural Summer Course stands as tangible proof that cross-country academic collaboration can generate innovative ideas to address future challenges in food, climate, and sustainability.
