Hamparan Perak Sub-district is one of the centers of rice production in Deli Serdang Regency. Kota Datar Village in Hamparan Perak Sub-district contributes to the productivity of rice farming, so most of the people choose the farming profession as their main livelihood. With rain-fed agriculture, Kota Datar Village in Hamparan Perak Sub-district relies on rain as its main irrigation and surface water irrigation as an additional source of irrigation. Inevitably, several times, the problem of lack of water quantity arises in rain-fed rice fields.

Understanding these conditions, a lecturer from the Universitas Sumatera Utara, Tasya Chairuna Pane, S.P., M.P along with 2 other fellow lecturers, Muhammad Khaliqi, S.P., M.Si. and Vindy Rilani Manurung, S.Pi., M.P came to Kota Datar Village in September 2021 while carrying out one of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, namely Community Service.

‘We provide solutions to the Kota Datar Village Farmer Group through the utilization of shallow groundwater as agricultural irrigation, especially in rain-fed rice fields, by building boreholes at several points so that they can accommodate irrigation water needs in a number of rain-fed rice fields,’ said Tasya Chairuna Pane as the head of the community service.

This activity was welcomed enthusiastically by the farmer group. One of the heads of the Namora Baginda Siregar Farmer Group (Gapoktan) revealed that his party was greatly helped by the Lecturer Service Programme organised by LPPM Universitas Sumatera Utara. ‘Hopefully, with the activity of making borehole installations, it can be utilized in a wider scope and does not require the addition of new channels,’ said the head of the farmer group in Kota Datar Village.
