Medan, July 28, 2026 – The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), organized a campus tour for participants of the World Friends Korea (WFK) Youth Volunteer Program 2026 as part of its efforts to introduce the faculty's educational facilities, laboratories, and research innovations.
The tour began with a visit to the Plant Biotechnology Laboratory, guided by laboratory technician Meliya Citra Dewi, S.Agr. Participants were introduced to the laboratory's facilities, research equipment, and plant tissue culture techniques, one of the key technologies used for plant propagation. As a token of appreciation, participants also received souvenirs in the form of genuine tissue-cultured plants packaged as keychains.
The group then visited the Food Chemistry and Biochemistry Analysis Laboratory, where laboratory assistants explained various food quality analysis activities, showcased research-based products developed by the laboratory, and demonstrated the use of a color identification instrument employed in food quality testing.
The campus tour concluded at the Soil Biology Laboratory, guided by soil science lecturer Wida Akasah, S.Agr., M.Sc., laboratory technician Rosneli, S.P., and laboratory assistants. During the visit, participants learned about the application of biochar as an innovative biomass waste management solution developed using technology created by Dr. Benny Hidayat, S.P., M.P., a lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture. The innovation was presented as a sustainable approach to improving soil quality while supporting environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
Through the campus tour, participants gained first-hand experience of the Faculty of Agriculture's educational and research facilities and explored how its research innovations are being developed to address challenges in the agricultural sector.
The laboratory visits also highlighted the Faculty of Agriculture's commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by introducing participants to a research-oriented learning environment, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through the dissemination of laboratory innovations, including biochar technology, SDG 13 (Climate Action) by showcasing environmentally sustainable technologies, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through strengthened international collaboration between the Faculty of Agriculture USU and Kajami's Table.
