Providing learning experiences that are aligned with workforce needs is an important part of student development. Through the Learning Outside the Study Program (PLPS) Program, students of the Undergraduate Program in Agrotechnology, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FP USU), participated in an internship at PTPN IV Regional II, North Sumatra. This activity brought students into contact with agricultural activities in an actual work environment.
During the internship, students participated in various activities related to plantation commodity management. The various processes encountered in the field provided an understanding of cultivation practices, management, and the application of technology to support production activities. This complemented the academic materials that students had acquired during their studies.
Direct interaction with field activities also encouraged students to understand work processes more comprehensively. Students were able to observe the application of agrotechnology principles while identifying various conditions encountered in agricultural activities. This process also trained their precision, responsibility, communication, and ability to adapt to a professional environment.
The PLPS activity was also part of an effort to prepare students to gain a closer understanding of the needs of the agricultural sector. The experience gained during the internship is expected to broaden students' perspectives in identifying opportunities and challenges in agriculture. Thus, the educational process can take place in a more contextual manner and support students' readiness to enter the workforce.
