Community service by Universitas Sumatera Utara in Hutanamale Village, Mandailing Natal, teaches the use of natural pesticides and netting for pest control in horticultural crops. This program aims to enhance farmers' knowledge and promote agricultural tourism development in the area.

Hutanamale Village, located in Puncak Sorik Merapi District, Mandailing Natal Regency (Madina), is one of the villages engaged in horticultural and plantation crops with great potential as a promising agricultural resource. Its location near the Batang Gadis National Park (TNBG) further supports the development of crop cultivation. However, unfortunately, farmers in this village face challenges due to limited knowledge in environmentally friendly pest control for horticultural crops. They also lack understanding of how to make and apply natural pesticides, and land use for horticultural crops and agro-ecotourism is not yet optimized.

In response to these issues, through the Community Service Program organized by LPPM Universitas Sumatera Utara, Faculty of Agriculture lecturers Ibu Ameilia Zuliyanti Siregar, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., along with Prof. Dr. Tulus, Vor Dipl. Math M.Si., Ph.D., and Ibu Putri Chandra Ayu, STP, M.Si., conducted a community service project in Hutanamale Village, Puncak Sorik Merapi District, Mandailing Natal Regency.

This community service activity took place from June 2022 to November 2022 and was planned as a multi-year community service program. The participants in the counseling and training sessions were from the Bahagia Farmers Group, which focuses on horticultural crops, and the Arabica Coffee Sejahtera Farmers Group (KAS). The methods used in the implementation of this community service included surveys, training, mentoring, and monitoring. The stages of the activity included: a) Surveying the research location; b) Oral presentations and training for 20 farmers on physical pest control (making and applying paranet on the land) and the creation of six types of natural pesticides; c) Farmer partners (20 people) and Agricultural Extension Officers (PPL) practiced the application and monitoring of pest control using rice wash water, vegetable waste, papaya leaf extract, garlic, papaya leaves, and chili pepper water; and d) Coordination with PPL, the Agriculture Office, and the Madina Tourism Office to initiate the formation of agricultural-based ecotourism.

This activity was well-received by the community in Hutanamale Village, Puncak Sorik Merapi District, Mandailing Natal Regency. Through this service, it is hoped that issues affecting the quantity and quality of horticultural crops can be addressed. In addition, the knowledge of farmer partners in pest and disease control for horticultural crops, both physically (using paranet) and chemically (with natural pesticides), is expected to improve. It is also hoped that the steps initiated will be applied sustainably and effectively in the Bahagia Farmers Group program in Hutanamale Village, Puncak Sorik Merapi, Madina.
