Universitas Sumatera Utara’s Faculty of Agriculture and PT. Inalum collaborate on chili mutant strain research to boost local production, including farmer education and regional development.

A coordination meeting on the progress of collaboration between PT. Inalum and the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), was held on Monday, January 24, 2024, at the Dean’s Meeting Room of the Faculty of Agriculture, USU. The meeting aimed to evaluate the progress of ongoing research and plan further studies to develop mutant chili strains.

PT. Inalum was represented by Supervisor Community Development Officer, Thaofan Dinar. From the Faculty of Agriculture, USU, the meeting was attended by Vice Dean III, Prof. Dr. Ir. Elisa Julianti, M.Si.; Secretary of the Agrotechnology Undergraduate Study Program, Prof. Dr. Ir. Yaya Hasanah, M.Si.; Head of the Plant Biotechnology Laboratory, Prof. Dr. Diana Sofia Hanafiah, S.P., M.P.; Head of the Plant Cultivation Laboratory, Dr. Ir. Haryati, M.P.; and Prof. Dr. Ir. Mariati, M.Sc., an expert in agronomy and horticultural plants. This collaboration involves lecturers and students from the Faculty of Agriculture, USU, in conducting research.

Initiated in mid-2022, the collaboration includes chili cultivation up to the M2 stage in Lubuk Cuik Village, Lima Puluh Pesisir District, Batu Bara Regency, North Sumatra. Future plantings will continue in Lubuk Cuik and expand to Kuala Tanjung, as these areas are the focus of PT. Inalum’s development. Additionally, a community service program is planned in Lubuk Cuik Village to educate farmers on chili cultivation in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP).

Through this collaboration, PT. Inalum and the Faculty of Agriculture’s research team aim to enhance local chili production through plant breeding and seed mutation research. It is hoped that chili farmers in Lubuk Cuik can manage their farms more efficiently and produce superior varieties with maximum yields. Ultimately, this partnership seeks to strengthen food security, particularly in North Sumatra.
