The pandemic does not always limit the movement of academics, researchers, and related parties to disseminate research results in their fields of expertise. The USU Faculty of Agriculture has again successfully held the 5th International Conference on Agriculture, Environment, and Food Security online on Thursday, 18 November 2021, with the theme ‘Precision Agriculture Technologies and Farming Systems towards Food Security and Sustainability’.
The 5th IC-AEFS 2021 was opened by the Rector of the Universitas Sumatera Utara, Dr. Muriyanto Amin, S.Sos, M.Si. The conference also successfully held keynote speakers from 4 continents, namely Assoc. Prof. Dr Julie A Howe (Texas A&M University, College Station, United States), Assoc. Prof. Thomas M. Banhazi, Ph.D (University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba Australia/Director of Innovation and R&D PLF Agritech Pty. Ltd. & PLF Agritech Europe Pty. Ltd, Assoc. Prof. Dr Yaya Rukayadi (Universiti Putra Malaysia, Selangor, Malaysia), Prof. Dr Elisa Julianti ( Universitas Sumatera Utara, Indonesia), and Assoc. Prof. Mgr. Jitka Kumhalova, Ph.D. (Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Prague, Czech Republic). To adjust the time with the keynote speakers, the plenary session was divided into 2 sessions. Acting as moderator in the first plenary session was Lukman Adlin Harahap STP., M.Si. Ph.D. ( Universitas Sumatera Utara) and Irda Safni SP., MCP, Ph.D (Universitas Sumatera Utara) in the second plenary session.
As conveyed by Riswanti Sigalingging, STP., M.Si., Ph.D as the head of the committee of the 5th IC-AEFS 2021, this international conference has attracted 156 papers to be presented from domestic and foreign participants such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Iraq, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Russia with various educational backgrounds such as academics, researchers, practitioners, and food-related students. The 156 papers were presented in 13 sections divided into 2 parallel sessions. At the end of the conference session, the winner of the Best Presenter award was announced, which went to Dr. Ahmad Siddik Thoha from the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara, with a paper entitled ‘Utilisation of UAV Technology for Mapping of Mangrove Ecosystem at Belawan, Medan City, North Sumatera, Indonesia.’
The conference was closed by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Dr Ir. Tavi Supriana, M.S. He expressed his gratitude and appreciation to all parties, committees, and participants who have made The 5th IC-AEFS 2021 a success. In his closing speech, he also hoped that next year in organising The 6th IC-AEFS 2022, the activity can take place offline at a better opportunity and place.
