Top Scientist Webinar at the Faculty of Agriculture, USU, discussing 'Global Halal Food in Industry and Marketing, between Faith and Science Fact' with expert speakers from Cornell University and International Islamic University Malaysia.

Medan – FP USU: The Food Technology Study Program at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara successfully organized the Top Scientist Webinar with the theme “Global Halal Food in Industry and Marketing, between Faith and Science Fact” virtually via Zoom meeting and live-streamed on YouTube on Tuesday, December 7, 2021.


Attended by over 100 participants from various backgrounds such as lecturers, students, and professionals, this webinar featured Prof. Joe M. Regenstein (Department of Food Science, Cornell University, USA) and Prof. Irwandi Jaswir (Director of INHART, International Islamic University, Malaysia) as speakers. The event was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, M.S. In his remarks, he enthusiastically welcomed the Top Scientist Webinar as part of the campus internationalization, in line with the direction from the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara, who introduced the tagline Transformation Towards the Ultimate. He also expressed hope that such events would serve as a momentum for students and lecturers at the Faculty of Agriculture to expand their international networks and apply them in the form of education, research, and community service in accordance with the Tri Dharma of Higher Education.

Moderated by the Secretary of the Food Technology Study Program, Adrian Hilman, S.TP., M.Sc., the webinar was divided into two sessions. Prof. Joe M. Regenstein was the speaker for the first session with the topic “The Animal Welfare Debate Around The Religious Slaughter of Animals: What Do We Actually Know?”. In his presentation, he discussed issues related to halal slaughter that still often face criticism in the Western world and what has been done to counter those criticisms, allowing halal slaughter to be practiced on a large scale while maintaining the halal slaughter regulations, the rules related to religious texts (the Qur'an), and animal welfare.

In the second session, Prof. Irwandi Jaswir served as the main speaker with the topic “Food Analysis, Authenticity, and Halal”. In his presentation, he discussed several challenges in meeting the halal and quality requirements of a product, such as the need for a more stringent monitoring or auditing system by halal authorities, the need for up-to-date and reliable scientific methods to analyze non-halal components in products, and the analytical techniques that pose a major challenge in product authentication. The event concluded with a Q&A session between the audience and the speakers.
