The utilization of organic waste as an energy source is one of the opportunities for developing more sustainable agricultural systems. This was among the issues discussed at The World Biogas Expo 2026, attended by Dr. Benny Hidayat, S.P., M.P., a lecturer in the Undergraduate Program in Agrotechnology, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FP USU). The event was held at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham, United Kingdom, on July 8–9, 2026.

The World Biogas Expo 2026 brought together academics, industry players, innovators, policymakers, and investors from various countries to discuss developments in anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas. Various innovations presented demonstrated how organic materials can be processed into energy sources while being utilized more optimally. For the agricultural sector, this approach creates opportunities to manage waste and biomass more efficiently.

Participation in this international forum is also in line with efforts to support SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Knowledge of biogas technologies can broaden perspectives on connecting waste management, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability. This is also relevant to the development of agriculture that is not only production-oriented but also considers resource efficiency and environmental impacts.

Through this activity, Dr. Benny Hidayat had the opportunity to follow developments in biogas technology while interacting with various stakeholders at the international level. This experience is expected to enrich the development of education and research within the Faculty of Agriculture USU. In the future, the knowledge gained can contribute to efforts to promote innovations that connect the agricultural sector with the sustainable utilization of energy and resources.
