The pandemic does not always limit the movement of academics, researchers, and related parties to disseminate research results in their fields of expertise, as evidenced by the USU Faculty of Agriculture's Undergraduate Program in Food Science and Technology (ITP) successfully holding the 1st International Conference on Food Technology, Nutrition, and Sustainable Agriculture online on Thursday 30 September 2021. This international conference is the result of collaboration between the Indonesian Food Technologists Association (PATPI), the ITP Study Program of the USU Faculty of Agriculture, the Master's Program in Food Science of the USU Faculty of Agriculture, and the Animal Husbandry Study Program of the USU Faculty of Agriculture with the theme ‘Towards a Competitive Food Industry 4.0 on Food Technology, Nutrition, and Sustainable Agriculture’.
The 1st ICFTNSA 2021 was opened by the Rector of the Universitas Sumatera Utara, Dr. Muriyanto Amin, S.Sos, M.Si. The conference also successfully held keynote speakers from 4 continents namely Prof. Shyam S. Sablani (Washington State University, USA), Prof. Claire Gaiani (University of Lorraine, Nancy, Lorraine, France), Assoc. Prof. Santad Wichienchot (Prince of Songkla University, Thailand), Prof. Dr. Ir. Umar Santoso, M.Sc. (President of Perhimpunan Ahli Teknologi Pangan Indonesia (PATPI)), Prof. Benu Adhikari (RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia). Acting as moderators for each plenary session were Prof. Dr. Yuli Witono, STP, MP ( Universitas Jember), and Prof. Dr. Ir. Zulkifli Lubis, M.App.Sc (Universitas Sumatera Utara).
According to Dr Ir. Hotnida Sinaga, M.Phil., Ph.D as the head of the 1st ICFTNSA 2021 committee, this international conference has attracted 55 papers from domestic and foreign participants such as Poland, Croatia, Estonia, Armenia, Pakistan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia with various educational backgrounds such as academics, researchers, practitioners, and students related to food. The 55 papers were presented in 5 sections divided into 2 parallel sessions. ‘This conference is to bring together scientists from within and outside the country so that we can talk together and share experiences, research, and innovations obtained. This is also in accordance with USU's vision to go international and also in accordance with TALENTA,’ said Dr Ir. Hotnida Sinaga, M.Phil., Ph.D, during a press release with USU TV.
The topics raised by the keynote speakers included ‘Designing Microcapsules for Enhanced Oxidate Stability of Micronutrients’ by Prof. Shyam S. Sablani, ‘The Role of Food Technology in Strengthening Food Security’ by Prof. Umar Santoso, M.Sc., ‘Starch-Polyurethane Hybrids as a New Material for Food Packaging Applications’ by Prof. Umar Santoso, M.Sc., and ‘The Role of Food Technology in Strengthening Food Security’ by Prof. Umar Santoso: Santad Wichienchot, and ‘Crossing The Bridge Between Dairy Powders Properties and Processes: Drying, Transport and Storage’ by Prof. Claire Gaiani
