Mrs. Iriana Joko Widodo, the First Lady of Indonesia, visited Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) on Wednesday, November 2, 2016. Her visit was to motivate thousands of high school students from Medan to fight against drugs.
The event, held at the USU Auditorium, was titled “Generasi Muda Indonesia Bersatu Lawan Narkoba dan Pornografi Demi Masa Depan Gemilang” (United Indonesian Youth Against Drugs and Pornography for a Brilliant Future). On this occasion, Iriana Jokowi, accompanied by Mufidah Jusuf Kalla, asked the students, as young people, to avoid the influence of drugs.
“Drugs can destroy morals, mental health, and the future,” said Iriana.
Iriana expressed her happiness and satisfaction with the statements of some high school students who promised not to try or use drugs and to avoid pornography.
In a separate speech, Brigadier General Andi Loedianto, the head of the North Sumatra Provincial Narcotics Agency (BNNP), explained several steps in drug prevention, known as the 3Ks: Know Yourself, Know Your Friends, and Know Your Environment. With these 3Ks, it is believed that drugs can be prevented, along with the support of family supervision.
Adisti, a student of State Senior High School 2 Medan who was invited to the event, said that the event was very excellent because it gave her and her friends an understanding of the dangers of drugs for young people like them. She hoped that such activities could continue intensively not only once because of the First Lady, but could continue elsewhere, and also encourage all young people like her to avoid drugs and pornography.
Meanwhile, USU Rector Prof. Runtung, S.H., M.Hum., and his wife, who welcomed the First Lady to USU, expressed their appreciation for USU being chosen as the host for the event.
“We are proud, as the host, to provide a place for the First Lady and her entourage for an event about drug prevention for young people,” said the Rector.
The Rector also appealed to all elements of society and the country to be concerned and focused on the prevention and eradication of drugs and pornography, which destroy all aspects of society and the country.
