On Friday, October 30, 2026, students of the Aquatic Resources Management (MSP) Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara, conducted an educational visit to the Food Security and Fisheries Office and the vannamei shrimp farming site owned by Pokdakan Damuli Perkasa, located in Pematang Guntung Village, Teluk Mengkudu District, Serdang Bedagai Regency. The activity was attended by 14 students specializing in aquaculture and aquatic biotechnology. The group was warmly welcomed by the Secretary of the Food Security and Fisheries Office and accompanied by fisheries extension officer Mr. Jimmy Simatupang throughout the visit.

During the visit, the students had the opportunity to learn more about the vannamei shrimp farming business managed by Pokdakan Damuli Perkasa under the leadership of Mr. Daniel Mulia Panjaitan, a young entrepreneur with an interest in vannamei shrimp farming. The students received explanations about the vannamei shrimp farming process, from the management of farming activities to the importance of implementing proper management practices to support successful production. This activity also provided an opportunity for students to directly observe the application of fisheries knowledge in business operations and on-site farming practices.
In addition to observing the farming activities, the students participated in discussions and learning sessions on bacterial culture and vannamei shrimp feed management. During these sessions, they gained insights into the importance of microorganism management in aquaculture systems and appropriate feeding practices to support shrimp growth and maintain their health. The explanations helped students understand that successful vannamei shrimp farming depends not only on the rearing process but also on the sustainable management of water quality, feed, and farming environmental conditions.
Through this visit, the students gained new knowledge and valuable experience to support their learning in Aquatic Resources Management, particularly in aquaculture and aquatic biotechnology. The activity also provided a practical overview of the challenges and business opportunities in vannamei shrimp farming, while enhancing students' understanding of the importance of integrating theoretical knowledge acquired in lectures with field practices. This experience is expected to equip students with the skills, creativity, and entrepreneurial interest needed to develop their potential in the fisheries sector.

This educational visit served as a form of hands-on learning that strengthened the relationship between higher education institutions, the government, fisheries extension officers, and aquaculture business operators. Appreciation was extended to the Food Security and Fisheries Office, Mr. Jimmy Simatupang as the fisheries extension officer, Mr. Daniel Mulia Panjaitan, and the Pokdakan Damuli Perkasa team, as well as all parties who welcomed the students and shared their knowledge. It is hoped that this activity will be beneficial and motivate students to continue developing their knowledge and contributing to the advancement of Indonesia's fisheries sector.
This experience is expected to motivate students to continue developing their competencies and contributing to the advancement of Indonesia's fisheries sector, in line with SDG 4 (Quality Education) through practice-based learning, SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) through the development of entrepreneurial potential in the fisheries sector, and SDG 14 (Life Below Water) through the implementation of sustainable aquaculture practices.
