Putri Maharani, a student of the Undergraduate Program in Aquatic Resources Management at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), initiated Jejak Mariteam, a literacy and community empowerment movement in Nelayan Seberang Village. Located at the Aulia Mangrove Reading House, this movement assists children of fishermen who still experience difficulties in reading, writing, and numeracy.
Jejak Mariteam is a Leadership Project managed by Putri as a recipient of the 15th cohort of the Beasiswa Aktivis Nusantara (BAKTI NUSA) in the Medan region. The student activist leadership development program operates under GREAT Edunesia Dompet Dhuafa. In carrying out this movement, Putri is supported by 15 students who are members of the Jejak Mariteam team.
The focus of Jejak Mariteam's activities is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4: Quality Education. This goal emphasizes the importance of inclusive and equitable education as well as lifelong learning opportunities for all.
More specifically, assistance in reading, writing, and numeracy is related to the direction of SDG target 4.1, which aims to ensure that girls and boys have access to quality primary and secondary education with effective learning outcomes. One of the indicators of this target highlights minimum proficiency in reading and mathematics. By reaching out to children of fishermen who experience learning difficulties, Jejak Mariteam places the educational needs of the local community as a primary concern. The presence of the literacy movement at the reading house is expected to help children strengthen the basic skills they need to participate in subsequent learning.
Putri's contribution to managing Jejak Mariteam is documented in a statement letter issued by the Head of the BAKTI NUSA Program, Ricky Hardiansyah, dated August 27, 2026. The letter states that Putri actively participated in the leadership development and capacity-building program and made a tangible contribution as the founder of Jejak Mariteam.
Through Jejak Mariteam, students take an active role in supporting education based on community needs. This initiative demonstrates how student leadership development can be realized through activities aligned with the SDGs agenda, particularly in strengthening children's literacy and numeracy.
