USU students collaborate in the Living Lab project to support smallholder oil palm farmers and the Food Estate in Humbang Hasundutan. This initiative aims to create a sustainable food system by diversifying high-value crops.
A group of talented students, including those from the Food Commerce & Technology program at Inholland University of Applied Sciences and the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry at Universitas Sumatera Utara, have been working hard to explore sustainable solutions for smallholder oil palm farmers during replanting and support the development of the Food Estate in Humbang Hasundutan. This program is part of the Living Lab collaboration project in North Sumatra.
The USU Faculty of Agriculture students involved include Nurhaniyah, Talia Silvia Nainggolan, Hadiba Syafira Lubis, and Adilla Syafira. They are from the Agribusiness Department, under the guidance of Dr. Rulianda Purnomo Wibowo, S.P., M.Ec., and Ir. Luhut Sihombing, M.P.
In partnership with SNV, the project has identified nutrient-rich, high-value crops that can be cultivated alongside oil palms. This initiative also fosters strategic partnerships to enhance the Humbahas Food Estate. By diversifying agricultural practices and strengthening partnerships between farmers and private companies, the students contribute to developing a sustainable food system in the region.
This Living Lab project also serves as a platform for cross-institutional collaboration, encouraging knowledge exchange and strengthening partnerships. We believe that leveraging collective knowledge can pave the way for innovative and impactful solutions.
The Living Lab project is initiated and facilitated by Nuffic Neso Indonesia, funded by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), and supported by the Netherlands Food Partnership, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, the KRIYA learning platform, and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Jakarta.
