The Master’s Program in Agribusiness, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held a Public Lecture titled “Globalization of Agricultural Markets and Its Impact on Local Markets” on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Soeratman Hall, Faculty of Agriculture USU.

The event featured Prof. Dr. Ir. Y. Bayu Krisnamurthi, M.S., Professor of Agribusiness at IPB University and Chairperson of the Indonesian Agribusiness Association (2023–2027), who also previously served as President Director of Perum Bulog (December 2023–September 2024), Deputy Minister of Agriculture (2009–2011), and Deputy Minister of Trade (2011–2014).

The event was moderated by Prof. Ir. Diana Chalil, M.Si., Ph.D., Head of the Master’s Program in Agribusiness, and attended by Dr. Rulianda Purnomo Wibowo, S.P., M.Ec. (Head of Undergraduate Program in Agribusiness), Riantri Barus, S.P., M.Si., M.P. (Secretary of the Master’s Program in Agribusiness), lecturers, and students from the Doctoral, Master’s, and Undergraduate Agribusiness Programs.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Rulianda encouraged students to actively engage in discussion and take advantage of the opportunity to learn from Prof. Bayu.

“I hope students will engage in discussions with Prof. Bayu. In every lecture, he always provides motivation and very logical explanations. Please make the most of this opportunity,” said Dr. Rulianda.
“We thank Prof. Bayu for his willingness to be here and share his insights with all of us,” he added.

In his presentation, Prof. Bayu explained that agribusiness globalization is part of a broader and more complex phenomenon that extends beyond trade. He noted that post-Covid-19 and amid global geopolitical dynamics, the level of globalization has declined, but it should not be avoided.

“Globalization has both benefits and risks. It does not need to be opposed or rejected but must be managed wisely,” explained Prof. Bayu.

Prof. Bayu also emphasized the importance of cultivating a new generation of international business players who are ready to compete in global markets — as exporters, cross-border entrepreneurs, or professionals capable of building collaboration and international networks.

This event is expected to broaden students’ understanding of global market dynamics and foster an entrepreneurial spirit in agribusiness with international competitiveness.
