The USU Faculty of Agriculture successfully held a public lecture titled “Recent Advances in Animal Product and Production” featuring expert speakers from Malaysia and Thailand. Discover the latest innovations in livestock and food products.

Medan – FP USU: A public lecture titled “Recent Advances in Animal Product and Production” was successfully conducted in a hybrid format at the DH. Penny Seminar Room on Tuesday, November 15, 2022.


The event began with opening remarks from the Head of the Animal Husbandry Program, Dr. Ir. Ma’aruf Tafsin, M.Si., followed by an official opening from the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, M.S. The event featured outstanding speakers from two countries who are highly specialized in their respective fields.

 


Before the lecture began, a ceremony was held to present souvenirs and ulos to the four speakers, accompanied by a group photo session:

  1. Prof. Dr. Awis Qurni Sazili (Malaysia) received a souvenir from the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture.
  2. Prof. Dr. Khalilah Abdul Khalil (Malaysia) received a souvenir from the Head of the Animal Husbandry Program.
  3. Asst. Prof. Dr. Ulisa Pachekreparpol (Thailand) received a souvenir from the Head of the Master’s Program in Animal Husbandry Science.
  4. Asst. Prof. Dr. Paramaporn Kerdsup (Thailand) received a souvenir from the Head of the Master’s Program in Food Science.

 

Lecture Highlights

  1. Prof. Dr. Awis Qurni Sazili from Universiti Putra Malaysia delivered a lecture on “Humane Killing of Animals for Halal Meat Consumption.” He emphasized three key quality aspects in livestock production: farm management quality, product quality, and its impact on improving consumer quality of life. He stated, “The quality of humans is reflected in what we eat.”
  2. Prof. Dr. Khalilah Abdul Khalil from University Technology MARA (UiTM) presented a topic titled “Novel Insight of Postbiotic and Parabiotic Produced by Probiotic for Agriculture.” She discussed the importance of sustainable and inclusive food systems to achieve global development goals. Innovations are crucial to support the projected global population of 9.7 billion by 2050, especially in meeting future food demands.
  3. Asst. Prof. Dr. Ulisa Pachekreparpol from Srinakharinwirot University Thailand delivered a lecture titled “Milk and Animal Food Products.” She highlighted challenges such as lactose intolerance and milk protein allergies in animal dairy products. To address this, she developed coconut yogurt, which offers sustainability and is suitable for lactose-intolerant consumers.
  4. Asst. Prof. Dr. Paramaporn Kerdsup from Srinakharinwirot University Thailand discussed “Probiotic Bacteria.” She explained that the World Health Organization (WHO) defines probiotics as "live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer health benefits to the host." Yogurt was noted as one of the most popular probiotic products.
     

 

The lectures were moderated by Dr. Ir. Hotnida Sinaga, M.Phill., the Head of the Master’s Program in Food Science at the Faculty of Agriculture.


The event was met with great enthusiasm from students and faculty members of Universitas Sumatera Utara's Faculty of Agriculture. Each session included an interactive Q&A session, both online and offline. The event concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Ir. Hotnida Sinaga, M.Phill.
