USU Faculty of Agriculture and BMKG forged strategic collaboration through an MoA signing and a public lecture on “Climate Crisis Impacts in Indonesia.”

Medan – FP USU: The signing of an MoA and a cooperation agreement between the Faculty of Agriculture at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), along with a public lecture by the Agrotechnology Study Program, was successfully conducted on Tuesday, September 27, 2022. The public lecture was themed “The Impacts of Climate Crisis in Indonesia: The Need for Adaptation and Mitigation.”

The event began with the singing of the Indonesian National Anthem, "Indonesia Raya," and consisted of two main sessions. The first session included the signing of the MoA and cooperation agreement, opened by Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan, Ph.D., Head of the Applied Climate Information Services Center at BMKG, followed by welcoming remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, M.S.

During this session, the cooperation agreement document was read by R.B. Moh. Ibrahim Fatoni, S.Pi., M.Si., an Agribusiness lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture. The session concluded with the signing of the cooperation agreement between USU Faculty of Agriculture and BMKG, followed by a group photo.

BMKG, a non-departmental government agency in Indonesia, focuses on meteorology, climatology, and geophysics. Its data is critical for agricultural research, particularly in predicting environmental conditions. This partnership aims to enhance research activities and community service conducted by faculty members and students.

The second session featured a public lecture by the Agrotechnology Study Program. It began with opening remarks from the Head of BMKG North Sumatra, Syafrinal, S.H., and the Head of the Agrotechnology Study Program, Dr. Nini Rahmawati, S.P., M.Si. The keynote lecture was delivered by Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan, Ph.D.

The lecture addressed the rapid shifts in climate phenomena, such as sudden changes from high temperatures during the day to heavy rains and strong winds at night, creating challenges for both society and agricultural researchers. It emphasized the need for greater understanding of the climate crisis's impacts in Indonesia and the importance of adaptation and mitigation.

The MoA signing and public lecture were successfully conducted, strengthening the collaboration between USU Faculty of Agriculture and BMKG. The lecture proceeded solemnly and included an engaging discussion with participants. Both activities were held in a hybrid format (online and offline) at the DH Penny Seminar Room from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIB.

The event concluded with closing remarks by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, M.S., who expressed her hopes that the partnership would yield significant benefits for both institutions.
