FP USU hosts a successful OHS laboratory safety seminar for lab heads and staff. This event, led by national OHS experts, aims to achieve SNI ISO/IEC 17025:2008 certification

Medan – FP USU: A socialization on the implementation of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) in laboratories was successfully held on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, in the Meeting Room of the Main Building of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara.

This event was a seminar aimed at introducing, strategizing, and providing examples of OHS implementation in laboratories. The goals of the socialization were as follows:

  1. To provide knowledge and understanding to participants, including laboratory heads and staff at the Faculty of Agriculture.
  2. To protect workers and laboratory users from accidents, occupational diseases, and other health hazards.
  3. To ensure that laboratory outcomes are safe and efficient for use.
  4. To guarantee smooth laboratory processes.

The seminar featured OHS experts, Ir. Ridwan Sinurat, M.Kes., and Rumondang Manuhuruk, S.T. The event also included remarks from the Vice Dean II of the Faculty of Agriculture, Ir. Revandy I.M. Damanik, M.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., who delivered an inspiring opening speech.

During his presentation, Mr. Ridwan Sinurat explained that OHS could be understood in four categories: philosophical, etymological, scientific, and practical. Etymologically, OHS refers to protective measures aimed at ensuring that workers and others in the workplace remain safe and healthy and that all resources are used safely and efficiently. Scientifically, OHS is a field of knowledge and its application to prevent accidents, fires, explosions, pollution, illnesses, and more.

Mr. Sinurat emphasized that workplace safety is crucial because it directly affects employee performance and, in turn, company performance. Better workplace safety facilities lead to fewer accidents.

The legal basis and standards for OHS implementation are regulated under:

  1. Law No. 1 of 1970 on Workplace Safety.
  2. Government Regulation No. 50 of 2012 on the Implementation of Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems (SMK3), which adheres to ISO 45001:2018.

Mr. Ridwan also outlined the five key strategies for implementing SMK3:

  1. Establishing policies.
  2. Planning K3 programs.
  3. Implementing and operating K3 measures.
  4. Monitoring and evaluating K3 performance.
  5. Reviewing and improving SMK3 performance.

The socialization program was well-organized and interactive, with enthusiastic discussions from the participants. The event ran from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Main Building of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara.

The hope is that this activity will encourage the adoption of OHS principles in all laboratories of the Faculty of Agriculture, supporting the achievement of SNI ISO/IEC 17025:2008 certification at USU.
