USU's Faculty of Agriculture collaborates with ForDAS Wampu in planting 1,000 trees and signing an MoA for environmental conservation in Langkat.

The Faculty of Agriculture sent several young lecturers and students to participate in the collaborative tree-planting program initiated by the Wampu Watershed Forum (ForDAS) to commemorate World Water Day in the upstream area of the Wampu Watershed, Garunggang Village, Kuala District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra Province, on Tuesday, March 22, 2022.

This program is part of the initiative titled "Inauguration of the Educational and Conservation Park for Land Resources in Lembah Juhar, Upstream Area of the Wampu Watershed, Garunggang Village, Kuala District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra Province." In addition to the collaborative program, the Faculty of Agriculture also signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with ForDAS Wampu North Sumatra.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Abdul Rauf, M.P., Chairman of ForDAS Wampu, stated that the event was attended by academics from various universities and professional organizations in North Sumatra. Participating institutions included the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), USU’s PSL and PWD Graduate Programs, Universitas Muslim Nusantara (UMN), Universitas Sari Mutiara Indonesia (USMI), Universitas Amir Hamzah (UNHAM), Universitas Alwashliyah (UNIVA), Universitas Islam Sumatera Utara (UISU), Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU), Universitas Medan Area (UMA), Universitas Tjut Nyak Dhien (UTND), Universitas Nadlatul Ulama Sumatera Utara (UNUSU), Universitas Sisingamangaraja XII Tapanuli (UNITA), Universitas Katolik Santo Thomas (UNIKA), Universitas Asahan (UNA), UINSU, and Institut Kesehatan Helvetia Medan.

Professional organizations active in environmental conservation also participated, including the Regional Council of the Environmental Intellectuals Association (PERWAKU) Sumut, Batangtoru Watershed Forum, Indonesian Soil and Water Conservation Society (MKTI) Sumut Branch, Indonesian Soil Science Society (HITI) Sumut Chapter, MAFI members from Sumut, ASPENTA Sumut, TAFAHUM, and Kader Konservasi Sumut.

Government representatives from Langkat Regency also attended, including Drs. Hermansyah, M.IP. (Assistant II to the Langkat Regency Government), Ir. Antoni Ginting (Deputy Chairman of the Langkat Regency DPRD), representatives from the Langkat Regency Military Command and Police Department, Kuala Subdistrict Head, Garunggang Village Head, and local residents. Both Drs. Hermansyah, M.IP., and Ir. Antoni Ginting expressed strong support for this initiative and hoped that similar programs could be implemented in other critical areas.

Event Chairperson Purnama Ginting explained that the educational and conservation park will be expanded from the initial 5 hectares of community-owned land to 25 hectares. The planted trees will include productive and reforestation species, sourced from donations by BPDAS Wampu Sei Ular, ASPENTA, and universities in Medan and North Sumatra.
