Medan — The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FP USU), through the Undergraduate Program in Animal Science and Master’s Program in Animal Science, held an International Public Lecture entitled “Advancing Sustainable Livestock Production in ASEAN: Integrating Agribusiness, Animal Health, and Innovative Feed Resources” on Friday (September 4, 2026).
The hybrid event was held at the D.H. Peny Building and via Zoom Meeting. The public lecture was attended by the Dean of FP USU, speakers, the Heads and Secretaries of the Undergraduate Program in Animal Science and Master’s Program in Animal Science, faculty members, and students from the Undergraduate and Master’s Programs in Animal Science.
The event began with welcoming remarks and an opening by the Dean of FP USU, Dr. Rulianda Purnomo Wibowo, S.P., M.Ec. In his remarks, the Dean emphasized the importance of aligning the curriculum, laboratories, facilities, and learning processes with industry needs to equip students with stronger competencies and better career prospects.
“In the future, our curriculum, laboratories, facilities, and learning processes should be better aligned with industry needs, so all of our students can have a better future and better job prospects,” the Dean stated.
The Dean also encouraged students not to focus solely on classroom learning and organizational activities, but also to build professional experience through various competency development activities.
“That’s why, for all students to achieve our vision, you must not only study in the classroom or focus on student organizations without professional development. You must have professional experience. So, let’s build professional knowledge and experience through seminars, workshops, and other activities with the right direction,” he continued.
Furthermore, the Dean expressed his hope that the activity would strengthen international collaboration and create opportunities for more intensive and progressive cooperation in the future.
“Hopefully, we can have more intensive collaboration and make further progress in the future. So, please take advantage of this class as much as possible,” he said.
The public lecture featured three speakers from Malaysia with expertise and experience in livestock production, feed, animal health, and agribusiness.
The first speaker, Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Khairiyah Binti Mat from Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Department of Agricultural Sciences, Faculty of Agro-Based Industry, Advanced Livestock and Aquaculture Research Group, delivered a presentation entitled “Sustainable Livestock Production Through Innovation Feed Resources.” The presentation discussed the importance of feed resource innovation in supporting the efficiency and sustainability of livestock production.
Next, Prof. Dato’ Seri Ashraf Bakar, Founder & CEO of Aliyah Rizq Holdings, delivered a presentation entitled “Sustainable Small Ruminants Production in ASEAN - Integrating Traditional System Into Lucrative Agribusiness Model.” The presentation highlighted the development of small-ruminant production by integrating traditional systems into economically viable and sustainable agribusiness models.
Meanwhile, drh. Ahmad Azamin bin Shamsudin from Aliyah Rizq Holdings presented “Pengurusan Ternakan & Kesehatan, Daripada Pengurusan Harian kepada Produktiviti Lestari,” which discussed livestock management and animal health, ranging from daily management to sustainably improving productivity.
Following the presentations, the activity continued with a discussion session moderated by Ir. Mhd. Adanan Purba, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPM., a faculty member of the Animal Science Study Program, FP USU. The discussion provided participants with an opportunity to explore various issues related to feed innovation, animal health and management, and the development of sustainable livestock agribusiness in the ASEAN region.
As part of the event, an Implementation Agreement (IA) was also signed to strengthen the commitment to cooperation and follow up on the collaboration that had been established. The signing of the IA is expected to create opportunities for the implementation of various joint activities, particularly in education, competency development, and academic and professional activities that support the advancement of the livestock sector.
The event continued with the presentation of certificates to the speakers and was officially concluded.
The International Public Lecture was part of FP USU’s efforts to strengthen quality education, students’ professional experience, and international collaboration networks. The activity also supported the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) through strengthening sustainable food and livestock production systems, SDG 4 (Quality Education) through enhancing international knowledge and learning experiences, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through strengthening cross-institutional and international collaboration.
Through this activity, FP USU continues to promote human resource development, innovation, and international collaboration to support the development of a productive, competitive, and sustainable livestock sector in the ASEAN region.
