Kecamatan Hamparan Perak is one of the sub-districts in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra province, Indonesia. The majority of the community earns a living farming, with the main crops being food crops such as rice, corn, and soya, with a small portion growing vegetables. In addition, there are also people who raise cattle as a side business for farmers.
Until now, the cultivation of food crops, especially rice, carried out by farmers in Kota Datar Village, Hamparan Perak Subdistrict, still uses conventional cultivation by using synthetic chemical fertilizers continuously. The use of synthetic chemical fertilizers in the long term can adversely affect the environment. In addition, the problem of fertilizer is often a factor inhibiting agricultural development. This is due to, among other things, the relatively high price of fertilizers, limited supply, and decreasing type and quality, which makes it difficult for farmers to get fertilizers according to their needs.
One alternative to anticipate and overcome the scarcity of fertilizer is for farmers to use organic fertilizer. The provision of organic materials can improve soil chemical properties. Therefore, the use of organic fertilizer must be socialized by the farming community. Seeing the potential that exists in the area in Hamparan Perak District in the application of science and technology to cultivate organic-based rice using environmentally friendly organic fertilizers is very suitable to be implemented.
