USU Faculty of Agriculture Holds International Lecture ‘Animal Production Resilience in Southeast Asia’

The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held the International General Lecture “Animal Production Resilience in Southeast Asia” on August 4, 2025, in hybrid format, featuring three experts from Malaysia. Initiated by the Animal Science and Food Science programs, the event discussed natural fruit vinegar, optimizing agro-residue feed, and animal behaviour, welfare, and dairy production, concluding with a traditional mangulosi ceremony to honour the speakers.

The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held an International General Lecture titled “Animal Production Resilience in Southeast Asia” on Monday (August 4, 2025) in a hybrid format at the DH. Penny Building, Faculty of Agriculture USU, and via Zoom Meeting. The event featured three experts from Malaysia: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Seri Intan Binti Mokhtar (Universiti Malaysia Kelantan), Dr. Mohd Nazri Bin Md. Nayan, and Dr. Aimi Nabilah Binti Hussein (Universiti Putra Malaysia), with Winda Fransisca Saragih, M.Pt. (USU) serving as the moderator.

 

The lecture was organized by the Animal Science Study Program (Bachelor’s and Master’s) and the Food Science Study Program (Master’s) of the Faculty of Agriculture USU. Attendees included the Head of the Master’s Program in Animal Science Dr. Ir. Nevy Diana Hanafi, S.Pt., M.Si., IPM; the Secretary of the Master’s Program in Animal Science Dr. Ade Trisna, S.Pt., MM; the Head of the Bachelor’s Program in Animal Science Dr. Ir. Ma’ruf Tafsin, M.Si., IPM; the Secretary of the Bachelor’s Program in Animal Science Ir. Achmad Sadeli, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPM., ASEAN.Eng; and the Head of the Master’s Program in Food Science Prof. Ir. Hotnida Sinaga, M.Phil., Ph.D. Also present were lecturers and students from the 2025 Summer Course, Master’s and Bachelor’s students of Animal Science, and Master’s students of Food Science, both in person and online.



In her remarks, Dr. Nevy expressed her appreciation to the speakers and participants:

“We have to increase livestock production and meat regularly in our communities. Finally, I would like to thank Dr. Aimi, Dr. Nazri, and Prof. Seri Intan that will share knowledge with us today,” she said.

 

Meanwhile, Prof. Hotnida conveyed her delight at the strong collaboration between the USU Faculty of Agriculture and partner universities in Malaysia:

“We are so happy while you are here. The topic today is very interesting, discussing Animal Production Resilience in Southeast Asia,” she stated.

 

The speakers delivered presentations on various relevant topics in line with current livestock developments in Southeast Asia, namely:

  1. “Natural Fruit Vinegar – Food, Cosmetic & Feed” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Seri Intan Binti Mokhtar.

  2. “Optimizing The Inclusion of Agro-residues in Total Mixed Ration Formulation” by Dr. Mohd Nazri Bin Md. Nayan.

  3. “Animal Behaviour, Welfare & Dairy Production” by Dr. Aimi Nabilah Binti Hussein.

The atmosphere of the lecture was warm and interactive. Participants were enthusiastic in asking questions, both in the lecture hall and via Zoom. As a token of appreciation, the USU Faculty of Agriculture presented certificates and souvenirs to the speakers, and also carried out the traditional mangulosi ceremony to honour them.

 

Through this activity, it is hoped that closer research collaborations and knowledge exchanges will be established between the USU Faculty of Agriculture and partner universities in Malaysia. Such collaborations are expected to contribute to strengthening the resilience and sustainability of livestock production in the Southeast Asian region.
