The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), successfully held The 9th International Conference on Agriculture, Environment, and Food Security (IC-AEFS) 2025 on Thursday, September 25, 2025, in a hybrid format, onsite at the DLCB Building USU and online via Zoom Meeting. The conference carried the theme “Transforming Agricultural Systems through Innovation and Sustainable Environment to Enhance Food Resilience,” featuring keynote speakers from New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia, and Indonesia, and publishing Scopus-indexed papers through the IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science.
The Dean of the USU Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, M.S., in her remarks stated, “It’s a great pleasure that I welcome all of the participants of the 9th International Conference on Agriculture, Environment, and Food Security. Knowledge only becomes valuable when it’s disseminated and applied to benefit humankind. We hope that AEFS 2025 will be a place to disseminate new knowledge in the field of agriculture, environment, and food technology. I also hope this conference can be a gathering place to share ideas, renew friendships, and build new collaborations,” said Prof. Tavi.

The Secretary of USU, Prof. Dr. dr. Muhammad Fidel Ganis Siregar, M.Ked(OG), Sp.OG, Subsp.FER, in his speech expressed his appreciation to all participants. “My deepest appreciation to all of you, researchers, practitioners, policymakers, students, and partners from across the globe for your presence and contributions. Universitas Sumatera Utara has consistently strengthened its role in advancing agriculture development through education, research, and community service. Let us remember, there is no food security without environmental security. This conference is a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, where research finds real-world application and strengthens our shared vision of a food-secure, sustainable future,” said Prof. Fidel.
The conference featured several international keynote speakers with interesting and relevant topics. Prof. Nazimah Hamid from Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand, presented “Valorisation of Food Processing Waste into Valuable Functional Ingredients,” highlighting the importance of managing food waste into high-value products. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashfaq from the University of Faisalabad, Pakistan, delivered “Enhancing Resilience Sustainable Crop Production in a Changing Climate through an Agricultural Innovative System,” which discussed strategies for sustainable crop production amid climate change. His colleague, Prof. Irfan Ahmad Baig, also from the University of Faisalabad, Pakistan, presented “Farmers’ Compliance with Agricultural Taxation: Determinants and Strategies to Improve Tax Revenue without Compromising Farmer Gains.”

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Karen Harper from Central Queensland University, Australia, spoke on “Enhancing Small Holder Resilience Through Livestock Ration Formulation,” focusing on strengthening smallholders through proper livestock feed formulation. From Indonesia, Dr. Ir. Nurzainah Ginting, M.Sc., lecturer at the USU Faculty of Agriculture, delivered a presentation entitled “Indigenous Probiotic: From Barn to Table,” highlighting the potential of local probiotics to support food security and public health.
After the Plenary Session, the conference continued with Parallel Sessions divided into ten presentation rooms, both onsite and online. Participants presented research in Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Economics, Animal Science, Marine and Fisheries Science & Environment, Food Science and Technology, and Plant Science. Each session was moderated by lecturers from the USU Faculty of Agriculture and attended by participants from various countries. Discussions were interactive, with researchers and practitioners exchanging ideas, providing feedback, and opening opportunities for collaboration. At the end of the event, the Best Presenter from each room was also announced as recognition of the quality of the research presented.

In the closing ceremony, the Chair of the Committee stated, “I would like to say thank you to the keynote speakers, the scientific committee, and all the participants of the 9th IC-AEFS 2025. Through this conference, we have met, communicated, and shared new ideas with each other. I hope we can adopt those ideas to improve our society and build positive communication wherever we are. Thank you very much for your participation,” said Prof. Elisa.
This international conference also received support from various professional organizations, including the Indonesian Food Technologists Association (PATPI), the Indonesian Agricultural Economics Association (PERHEPI), the Indonesian Phytopathological Society (PFI), the Indonesian Association of Nutritionists and Feed Scientists (AINI), the Indonesian Agribusiness Association (AAI), the Indonesian Agrotechnology/Agroecotechnology Association (PAGI), and the USU Center for Tuber Studies. The presence of these parties is expected to further strengthen the role of the USU Faculty of Agriculture in promoting global collaboration towards sustainable agricultural systems and global food security.
