USU Livestock Contest and Expo - HPDKI DPD North Sumatera 2024
The Animal Husbandry Study Program of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), in collaboration with the Indonesian Sheep Goat Breeders Association (HPDKI) North Sumatera, successfully held a Livestock Contest and Expo on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at the Faculty of Agriculture, USU. Breeders from various regions in Sumatra attended the goat contest.
Fabian Joshua Manurung, Head of the Committee, said that the contest was held with the aim of building friendships between breeders. “Because there are farmers from Riau, then West Sumatra, and of course from North Sumatra too,” he said.
The Head of the USU Animal Husbandry Study Program, Dr. Ir. Ma'ruf Tafsin, M.Si., IPM, was also present and gave a speech. He said that this was the second contest held as a form of project-based learning. He explained, “This contest trains students to make activities whose outputs they can learn how healthy and good livestock.”
In addition, Dr. Ma'ruf also expressed appreciation to the breeders who had been doing their jobs.
The Head of HPDKI North Sumatra, Muslim Sembiring, S.Pt., M.Pt., said that this activity also aims to invite farmers together to realize the improvement of the sheep market.
Vice Dean II of the USU Faculty of Agriculture, Ir. Revandi Iskandar Muda Damanik, M.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D, was also present and officially opened the livestock contest with the theme “Advancing National Livestock Quality, Proud of North Sumatra Seeds.”
The livestock contest was held in two categories, namely the PE (Peranakan Etawa) goat competition and the weight competition.
One of the contestants, Nuhu Darwi, said he was happy with the contest. Nuhu mentioned that, “I am happy to participate in this contest not because of the prizes sought, but how we fellow breeders can advance to create meat self-sufficiency”.
