USU Agriculture Faculty lecturers visit PSDKU-USU Nias Utara, focusing on local agriculture development and educational initiatives to empower rural human resources.

This time, PSDKU-USU Nias Utara welcomed two lecturers from the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara, namely Ameilia Zuliyanti Siregar, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. (Lecturer of Plant Pests and Diseases Science) and Dr. Ir. Charloq, M.P. (Lecturer of Agronomy).

Both Dr. Ameilia and Dr. Charloq were enthusiastic about this program and deeply moved by the high spirits of the students during the lectures. Dr. Ameilia stated, “Agricultural management can be nurtured among students and farmers in Nias Utara. Crops such as rice, coconut, rubber, betel nut, cocoa, corn, bananas, and horticulture are produced in large quantities but are still in raw form.” Meanwhile, Dr. Ir. Charloq added, “Even today, rubber latex is shipped in block form because there is no rubber processing factory.”

Previously, higher education in Nias Utara was represented by Aknira (North Nias State Community Academy), which collaborated with Politani Payakumbuh. However, it was closed in 2019. In 2021, Universitas Sumatera Utara established its PSDKU (Off-Campus Study Program).

The presence of PSDKU USU in Nias demonstrates the university’s commitment to improving education in underdeveloped regions. This program aims to help develop human resources in Nias, enabling them to advance their region according to its potential in agriculture, livestock, and fisheries.

Since its inception in 2021, classes were initially held online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Starting in 2022, however, they have transitioned to in-person learning. To date, PSDKU-USU Nias Utara has completed three semesters. Looking ahead, it is hoped that within five years, the program will expand into a full-fledged university with five faculties: Agriculture, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Engineering, Fisheries, and Cultural Sciences.

Currently, the PSDKU program offers two study programs: Agrotechnology and Aquatic Resource Management. The third semester currently has 35 students enrolled, while the first semester has 29 students.

Nias holds significant potential for agricultural land management. In addition, its beautiful beaches and rich marine resources offer promising opportunities to be developed into sustainable sources of animal protein. Previously, USU Rector Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., in collaboration with the North Nias Regency Government, initiated the establishment of PSDKU USU, supported by the presence of 38 high schools and vocational schools in the region. He emphasized that Nias has great local human resource potential, with high community interest in pursuing higher education as part of realizing the vision of Transformation Towards Ultimate.
