The Faculty of Agriculture of Universitas Sumatera Utara (FP USU) welcomed a delegation from Peking University and the Sumatran Elephant Foundation (YAGASU) to explore international collaboration in education, research, and environmental innovation. The partnership is expected to strengthen research on climate change, coastal conservation, blue carbon, and sustainable blue economy development in Indonesia.

The Faculty of Agriculture of Universitas Sumatera Utara (FP USU) welcomed a delegation from Peking University and the Sumatran Elephant Foundation (YAGASU) on Wednesday (June 10, 2026) at the Dean’s Meeting Room of FP USU. The meeting marked an initial step in exploring strategic collaboration opportunities aimed at strengthening education, research, and innovation in environmental sustainability and sustainable development.

The Peking University delegation was led by Prof. Ruili Li and Prof. Guoyu Qiu, accompanied by eight other members. Meanwhile, YAGASU was represented by four delegates. Representing FP USU were the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Dr. Rulianda Purnomo Wibowo, S.P., M.Ec., along with the Dean’s advisors and lecturers from the Aquatic Resources Management Study Program.

The discussion focused on a range of potential collaborative initiatives, including joint research projects, summer courses, student exchange programs, joint supervision, and the strengthening of international academic networks. These collaborations are expected to enhance research capacity and human resource development in addressing the growing challenges of climate change and coastal resource management.

During the meeting, Dr. Rulianda Purnomo Wibowo expressed his hope that the exploratory discussions would develop into a partnership capable of delivering meaningful benefits for both institutions and society. “I hope this tripartite collaboration can be established across various areas that support the advancement of the Aquatic Resources Management Study Program, the Faculty of Agriculture, and the development of Indonesia’s blue economy,” he stated.

YAGASU CEO Bambang Suprayogi explained that YAGASU has previously collaborated with Peking University through mangrove restoration programs in Sumatra. This experience is considered a strong foundation for expanding cooperation with FP USU in education, research, and community engagement activities.

Meanwhile, Prof. Guoyu Qiu highlighted several research areas with strong potential for collaboration, including climate change, blue carbon, biodiversity, and coastal rehabilitation. These topics are highly relevant to sustainable development goals and climate change mitigation efforts in Indonesia.

Through this meeting, FP USU reaffirmed its commitment to expanding international partnerships as part of its implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. It is hoped that the collaboration between FP USU, Peking University, and YAGASU will soon be realized through concrete programs that contribute to scientific advancement, environmental conservation, and the strengthening of Indonesia’s blue economy.
