Medan — Students of the Aquatic Resources Management Study Program (MSP), Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FP USU), have once again achieved an accomplishment by securing funding through the APRI YOUTH – Sustainable Trace Proposal Funding Program organized by the Indonesian Blue Swimming Crab Management Association (APRI).
The funding was awarded for a research proposal entitled “Integration of Blue Swimming Crab Fisheries Management and Marine Mammal Interaction in Kwala Gebang, Langkat.” The proposal was prepared by an MSP student team consisting of Sri Alya Nasyiah, Chelsea Kayla Riady, Inike G Divana Naibaho, and Fitri Aulia Lubis, under the supervision of Vindy Rilani Manurung, S.Pi., M.P.
The research addresses sustainable management of blue swimming crab (Blue Swimming Crab) fisheries while also examining interactions between fishing activities and marine mammals (Marine Mammal Interaction) in the Kwala Gebang area of Langkat. The study is expected to contribute to the development of more responsible fisheries management practices while maintaining the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems.
The achievement of MSP students of FP USU in securing research funding represents an implementation of research-based learning. Through their involvement in research activities, students not only gain academic experience but also develop the ability to identify problems, formulate scientifically based solutions, and generate ideas relevant to the needs of aquatic resource management.
This achievement is also aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, through strengthening students’ competencies in research and experiential learning. In addition, the research contributes to SDG 14: Life Below Water by promoting sustainable management of aquatic resources and fisheries while supporting the protection of marine ecosystems.
This accomplishment demonstrates the commitment of FP USU students to developing innovations and research that are not only oriented toward academic achievement but also provide tangible benefits for the sustainability of aquatic resources and coastal communities.
