Medan-USU: France, through its ambassador Corinne Breuze, is committed to enhancing educational cooperation with Indonesia. This commitment was marked by the 7th Joint Working Group Indonesia-France at Universitas Sumatera Utara on Monday, March 9, 2015. The two-day meeting (March 9-10, 2015) carried the theme "How Education and Research Respond to Sustainable Development?".

Attending the opening event were representatives from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education, Prof.Ir. Hermawan Kresno Dipojono, M.S.E.E., Ph.D., USU Rector Prof. Dr. dr. Meanwhile, USU Vice Rector IV, Prof. Ningrum Natsya Sirait, emphasized in the press meeting that France is highly interested in the USU Teaching Hospital (Faculty of Medicine) and the Faculty of Engineering. The USU Hospital is projected to excel in tropical medical handling and is attractive to France for helping to develop scientific research related to tropical diseases. “So it's not about the hospital's operations, but more about the research. France has excellent scientists and researchers, so we are exploring which priorities can be cooperatively developed. Once identified, we will align them,” she said.

Representing the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education, Prof.Ir. Hermawan Kresno Dipojono, M.S.E.E., Ph.D., also added in the press meeting that cooperation with France involves cultural exchange and research development. This is very beneficial for both countries as it can enhance national competitiveness. He further mentioned that the current collaboration includes a joint degree, double degree, joint public in research, and exchange of faculty and students. French Ambassador Corinne Breuze expressed hopes that this cooperation will increase Indonesian students' interest in studying in France, noting that there are currently about 1,500 Indonesian students in France.

The fields of study most chosen by Indonesian students are Engineering, Science, Health, and Trade Management. France provides scholarships or health insurance, while Indonesia provides scholarships for living expenses. Bertrand de Hartingh, Counselor for Cooperation and Culture, Director of IFI, explained that one must be proficient in French to study in France. Currently, there are seven people ready to depart for France. He also mentioned that many French entrepreneurs are interested in opening business opportunities in Indonesia.
