The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara, held the 2025 National Seminar on Research and Community Service (RPPM) XII, a scientific forum that brought together researchers, lecturers, students, and practitioners from various regions in Indonesia. Carrying the theme “Innovation for Food Security, Health, and Environment toward a Competitive Indonesia,” this event served as a manifestation of FP USU’s commitment to promoting research and community service that offer solutions to global challenges and support sustainable development.

The event, held in a hybrid format on Wednesday, 12 November 2025 at the DH Penny Hall of the USU Faculty of Agriculture and via Zoom, covered a wide range of topics, from research findings in agriculture and food security, food technology innovation, health, environment, sustainable energy, to socioeconomics, agribusiness, and entrepreneurship. In addition, the seminar also focused on community service outputs, such as the application of science and technology-based innovations, improving community welfare, as well as research-based extension and training across disciplines.

All accepted papers will be published in the Proceeding Conference Series Talenta, and several outstanding papers have the opportunity to be published in the Journal of Saintech Transfer (Talenta Publisher USU). The event also received support from the Indonesian Society of Animal Scientists (HILPI) and the Indonesian Association of Food Technologists (PATPI), strengthening the seminar’s position as a national-scale academic forum.

In her remarks, Chairperson Prof. Dr. Ir. Elisa Julianti, M.Si., stated that this year’s seminar featured a broader format. “This year we divided the seminar into two groups. In previous years, we only held the Community Service Results Seminar, but this year we are holding both the Research and Community Service Seminar. Participants are also very diverse, coming from North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Malang, Bali, and even Kalimantan. Through this seminar we hope to exchange information, especially regarding innovations in food security,” said Prof. Elisa.

The Dean of the USU Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, MS., also emphasized the importance of improving the quality of scientific publication. “This year’s seminar has expanded to include research. Moving forward, what needs to be added is ensuring that these papers can be published in national or international journals. Hopefully this seminar is successful and continues to increase scientific contributions to the community,” conveyed Prof. Tavi.

The seminar featured two speakers: Prof. Dr. Ir. C. Hanny Wijaya, M.Agr. from IPB University, who presented “Innovation and Commercialization of Functional Food Products: From Laboratory Research to Market,” and Prof. Dr. Ritha F. Dalimunthe, S.E., M.Si., Head of the Entrepreneurship Study Program FEB USU, who delivered “Community Empowerment through Agripreneurship and Digital Innovation toward a Competitive Indonesia.” Both sessions were moderated by Dr. Ir. Ma’ruf Tafsin, M.Si., IPM.

After the presentation sessions and certificate awarding to the speakers, the event continued with parallel presentations divided into two major groups, namely community service and research. Each room was facilitated by PICs: Prof. Ir. Hotnida Sinaga, M.Phil., Ph.D.; Prof. Dr. Ir. Elisa Julianti, M.Si.; Dr. Ir.
