Coordination meeting between PT. Inalum and USU Faculty of Agriculture discussed research progress on empowering chili farmers in Desa Lubuk Cuik, Batu Bara.

The Coordination Meeting on the Development of Collaboration between PT. Inalum and the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), was successfully held on Monday, September 18, 2023, at the Main Building Meeting Room of the Faculty of Agriculture, USU. This meeting aimed to review the progress of ongoing research and plan further research for the upcoming year.

PT. Inalum was represented by Vice President CSR/TJSL, Ali Hasian, and his team. Meanwhile, the Faculty of Agriculture was represented by Prof. Dr. Ir. Elisa Julianti, M.Si., as Vice Dean III, Prof. Dr. Ir. Yaya Hasanah, M.Si., as Secretary of the Undergraduate Program in Agrotechnology, and Prof. Dr. Diana Sofia Hanafiah, S.P., M.P., as Head of the Plant Biotechnology Laboratory. This collaboration involves faculty members of the Faculty of Agriculture in conducting the research.

Initiated in mid-2022, this collaboration focuses on empowering chili farmers in Desa Lubuk Cuik, Kecamatan Lima Puluh Pesisir, Kabupaten Batu Bara, North Sumatra. Desa Lubuk Cuik is one of the largest chili-producing areas in North Sumatra, with 85 hectares of farmland producing 18 tons of chili daily. However, the management of chili growth and production in the area is considered suboptimal.

Through this collaboration, PT. Inalum and the Faculty of Agriculture aim to enhance the production of local chili plants through research on plant crossing and seed mutation, specifically in the field of Plant Breeding. The collaboration is expected to optimize the farmers' efforts, produce superior plant varieties with maximum yields, and ultimately support national economic recovery, particularly in Batu Bara Regency, North Sumatra.
