Medan-USU: "The European Union is interested in enhancing cooperation with North Sumatra Province and strengthening ties with Medan, as the provincial capital and regional center. We see this as a significant opportunity to showcase European Union activities in Indonesia and establish connections with the local government, business community, civil society, as well as the academic environment and students," stated the European Union Ambassador, Mr. Vincent Guérend, during his address at the Seminar On Sustainable Tourism held on Thursday, October 20, 2016, at the Auditorium Building of Universitas Sumatera Utara.
Mr. Vincent Guérend also added that the European Union delegation's visit to Universitas Sumatera Utara is part of a series of visits they will make to various locations in North Sumatra. "On the first day of our visit, we discussed human rights, religious tolerance, the environment, and education with civil society. Later, I opened the European Union Scholarship Exhibition at the Aryaduta Hotel," he continued. "In this exhibition, a group of women from North Sumatra showcased woven crafts, participating in a project funded by the European Union."
Additionally, on October 20, the European Union delegation visited cultural sites in Medan and organized a seminar on sustainable tourism at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) to share the European Union's experiences in addressing environmental challenges and promoting innovative and high-quality tourism initiatives.
Meanwhile, Mr. Vincent Guérend announced that on October 21, the European Union delegation would visit the Elephant Conservation Unit in Tangkahan within the Gunung Leuser National Park. The European Union has provided substantial support for the unique Leuser Ecosystem and will continue to support climate change mitigation efforts in Indonesia and biodiversity in ASEAN. As a symbol of commitment to the environment, conservation, and resistance to climate change, the European Union adopted a baby elephant named 'Eropa' from Tangkahan as the European Union mascot in Indonesia in 2015. This visit provides an opportunity to see 'Eropa,' who is currently one year old, and discuss ecotourism and conservation opportunities with the local community.
The European Union delegation visiting USU was not only attended by Mr. Vincent Guérend as the European Union Ambassador but also by several ambassadors of other European countries, including the Ambassador of Austria, Mrs. Helene Steinhausl, Ambassador of Greece Mr. Georgios Dogoritis, Ambassador of Hungary Mrs. Judit Nemeth-Pach, Ambassador of Ireland Mr. Kyle O’Sullivan, and Ambassador of Italy Mr. Vittorio Sandalli. During the seminar, the ambassadors explained tourism in their respective countries in front of approximately 800 attending USU students.
The seminar was also attended by USU Rector Prof. Dr. Runtung, S.H., M.Hum., Vice Rector II Dr. dr. Muhammad Fidel Ganis Siregar, M.Ked.(OG) SpOG(K), and Head of the International Affairs Office (IAO) Dr. Esther Sorta Nababan, M.Sc. Prof. Runtung, the USU Rector, expressed his pride in the European Union delegation's visit to Universitas Sumatera Utara, stating, "We are very proud because the delegation from the European Union in Indonesia is currently at USU.
