Jungle of Food Festival, held by USU Food Technology on October 21, 2024, raised the theme of functional food, food waste, and zero hunger. The event featured food exhibitions, competitions, and inspirational talk shows to support the development of sustainable food innovation.

The Jungle of Food Exhibition and Festival themed “Optimizing Local Wisdom in Functional Food Product Innovation as an Action to Bridge Sustainable Development Environmental Integrity” with the subtheme “Functional Food, Food Waste, and Zero Hunger” was held by the Food Technology Study Program and the Food Technology Student Association (IMTP) on October 21, 2024 in the courtyard of Soeratman Hall, Faculty of Agriculture USU.

The event began with remarks from Taufik Ikhsan, S.TP. (Chairman of IMTP), Muhammad Setiawan (Chairman of JFood Festival), Mimi Nurminah, S.T.P., M.Si. (Head of Food Technology Study Program), Ir. Terip Karo-karo, M.S. (Lecturer Representative of Food Technology Study Program), and Ir. Revandy I.M. Damanik, M.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. (Vice Dean II), was present as a representative of the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and opened this event with great joy. The event was also attended by Food Technology lecturers, Food Technology students, and high school student representatives from all over Medan.

JFood Festival also presented two resource persons who are experts in their fields, namely Karina Nursyafira (Chief Communication and Community Engagement Aksata Pangan) who presented material about Aksata Pangan (Zero Waste), and Prof. Dr. Ir. Elisa Julianti, M.Si. (Vice Dean III) who presented material about Functional Food.

“Aksata Pangan is a food bank where we distribute food that is potentially wasted but still suitable for consumption to people in need,” explained Karin, starting her talk.

“Food waste is food waste generated from the food supply chain that is distributed and consumed, but wasted for various reasons, one of which is due to human activity. According to the latest data from Databox and FAO, Indonesia is the 5th largest food waste producer in the world and the 1st in Southeast Asia. For this reason, we must be aware of this problem because it has an impact on the environment, economy, and society,” added Karin in her explanation.

The next presentation by Prof. Elisa explained that functional food is food that has more functions than just providing nutrition. The main function of food is to provide nutrients needed by the body for growth and metabolism. The second function is to fulfill the needs of taste and pleasure (sensory function). The third function is the physiological function, which provides health benefits to the human body.

In addition to the food exhibition, at the end of the event, the winners of the JFood Festival video and poster competition that had been participated in by students of the USU Faculty of Agriculture were also announced. The event was further enlivened by musical performances by the band team and stand-up comedy from Food Technology students who also enlivened the JFood Festival.
