Medan-USU: In line with the Work Program of the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) for the 2016–2021 period, the university will continue to strive to develop all available potentials. One of the efforts is to establish the USU campus in the Kwala Bekala area. This campus is not only intended to be a beautiful place but also has the potential to become an Agrotourism destination for the residents of Medan and its surrounding areas.

This was revealed by the Rector of USU, Prof. Dr. Runtung, S.H., M.Hum., during a visit from a delegation from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) on Thursday (10/11/2016) in the Rector's office at the BPA Building, USU.

Rector of USU, accompanied by Vice Rector II of USU, Dr. dr. Muhammad Fidel Ganis Siregar, M.Ked.(OG), Sp.OG.(K); Vice Rector III of USU, Drs. Mahyuddin, M.IT., Ph.D.; Vice Rector IV of USU, Prof. Dr. Ir. Bustami Syam, M.SME.; Vice Rector V of USU, Ir. Luhut Sihombing, M.P.; Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences of USU, Dr. Budi Agustono; and Head of USU's International Office (KUI), Dr. Esther SM Nababan, warmly welcomed the visit from KOICA.

Prof. Runtung conveyed, "I have heard that Agriculture is very strong in Korea, as well as Maritime and Engineering fields. So, I hope that if there are experts or professors in these fields who can be sent here, it will certainly help USU. Because at USU itself, there is the Faculty of Agriculture, the third oldest faculty at USU, and also has the Agriculture department."

The KOICA delegation, namely Shin Hyeran as the WFK Program Manager at the KOICA Office, and Dory Widyanasari, stated that the purpose of their visit to USU is to strengthen the cooperation between USU and KOICA, which has been established since 2009, and also to learn about USU's plans related to KOICA.

"KOICA volunteers in Medan are 3, the first at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences of USU, Miss Sarah Kim, who teaches Korean language, then the second at SMK 9, and the third is at SMK 7. Volunteers assigned here are for two years, so we want to know the extent of USU's plans for our volunteers serving at USU," explained Dory.

"If there is a plan for USU to bring in KOICA volunteers in fields other than the Korean language, such as Agriculture and others, then we hope USU can fill out the proposal form from KOICA. However, the process may take up to 6 months or even one year. Once we receive the proposal form, we will then submit it to the main office in Korea. Then they will advertise for those interested in becoming volunteers in Indonesia," added Dory.

KOICA is part of the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs Diplomacy Program, which seeks to build friendships with other countries. Such educational collaborations between USU and KOICA have positively impacted the relationship between Indonesia and Korea. Since 2009, KOICA has assigned volunteers to Universitas Sumatera Utara, and in 2014, KOICA continued its collaboration with USU by assigning volunteers to the Faculty of Cultural Sciences at USU.
