The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara, welcomed a visit from the National Downstreaming Team to discuss and gather information on innovation products developed by the faculty’s lecturers.

The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), welcomed a visit from the National Downstreaming Team on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at the Dean's Meeting Room, Faculty of Agriculture.

The purpose of the visit was to hold discussions and collect information related to innovative products developed by the lecturers of the Faculty of Agriculture. Attending the meeting were the Vice Dean III of the Faculty (Prof. Dr. Ir. Elisa Julianti, M.Si), Head of the Cooperation Subdivision, Mr. Ricky Syahputra, along with several representatives from the National Downstreaming Team.

Mr. Ricky Syahputra, representing the National Downstreaming Team, inquired about agricultural commodity issues in North Sumatra that could potentially be downstreamed and supported as a bridge to the central government. These concepts and issues will later be presented to the Central Downstreaming Task Force, which will directly provide outreach or training based on the region’s needs—such as identifying commodities suitable for national-scale distribution, market potential, and other related aspects. "If the Faculty of Agriculture has any concepts or proposals, we strongly encourage them to submit them as soon as possible," Mr. Ricky emphasized.

Prof. Elisa shared that the Faculty of Agriculture is actively involved in community service initiatives through collaborations with MSMEs. One of the key programs is the downstreaming of chrysanthemum flower tea, developed in cooperation with Desa Raya in Berastagi, which serves as a partner village in the production of chrysanthemum tea. Although the program is already running, its marketing reach remains limited to local areas. In addition, the Faculty of Agriculture has also developed other agricultural products such as andaliman, tubers, coconut, Samosir coffee, oranges, and porang.

“We hope to establish partnerships with companies, as current MSME involvement remains limited. This is one of the main challenges we are facing,” said Prof. Elisa.

It is hoped that this visit will mark a positive step forward for the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara, in expanding the reach and impact of its innovative products at the national level.
