Undergraduate Program (S-1)

The Undergraduate Program in Agribusiness at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is a study program that integrates business concepts with agriculture. In this program, students learn agricultural business management strategies with a focus on business planning, marketing, resource management, and economic aspects of agriculture. The main goal is to increase the profitability and sustainability of agricultural businesses, as well as ensuring sufficient and quality food supply. Established in 1957, the Undergraduate Program in Agribusiness is one of the oldest study programs at USU, supported by competent and nationally certified teaching staff who are committed to providing students with an interactive and effective learning experience.

With the best curriculum, this program aims to enable students to analyze data and information comprehensively by integrating scientific knowledge in agriculture and business economics. Graduates of the Undergraduate Program in Agribusiness have a variety of career prospects, ranging from becoming agribusiness experts in various sectors to becoming entrepreneurs. This program also encourages students to apply the knowledge gained during the education period to create business opportunities in the community, both on a small and large scale. Upon completion of this study program, students will obtain a Bachelor of Agriculture (S.P.) degree as proof of their expertise and qualifications in the field of agribusiness.

History

1957

The Undergraduate Program in Agribusiness was first established as the Department of Agricultural Socio-Economics along with the establishment of the USU Faculty of Agriculture on November 16, 1956, by the Yayasan Universitas Sumatera Utara based on Ministerial Decree No. 8691/S on August 25, 1958. At the beginning of its establishment from 1957 to 1967, the Department of Agricultural Social Economics building was located on Jl. Seram No. 4 and Jl. Jogja No. 30 (now the North Sumatra Governor's office).

1965

The founding figure of the Department of Agricultural Socio-Economics was Prof. D. H. Penny, who was a visiting professor from ADC in 1965 with several companions, including S. B. Simanjuntak (graduated in 1964), Meneth Ginting (graduated in 1996), Mangantar Britany Sirait, M. S. Hutabarat, Abdul Rahman Rangkuti, Sofyan Nasution, and Harry Situmorang forming the forerunner of the establishment of the Department of Agricultural Socio-Economics. Due to Indonesia's political situation in 1965, Prof. D. H. Penny returned to Australia and temporarily lived in Malaysia.

1965

Despite the shortage of lecturers, the existence of the Department of Agricultural Socio-Economics of the Faculty of Agriculture in 1965 was still defended by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at that time, Ir. Tan Hong Tong. This was due to the fact that the Department of Agricultural Socio-Economics, along with Agricultural Cultivation, were the first departments to be declared in the Faculty of Agriculture at its establishment.

1965

The shortage of teaching staff was finally resolved with the help of the Faculty of Economics, Universitas Sumatera Utara. The lecturer of the Faculty of Economics who helped was Prof. Hadibroto. He became the temporary Head of the Department and S. B. Simanjuntak as the Secretary of the Department. Four extraordinary staff were recruited during this period: Amudi Pasaribu, B. L. Sitorus, Anwar Abu Bakar, and F. Siahaan.

1967

From 1967 to 1974, the Department of Agricultural Social Economics used the former SMA Andalas building on Jl. Cik Ditiro No. 8, Medan.

1971

The Department's functionaries were Prof. Hadibroto and S. B. Simanjuntak from 1965 to 1971, who were assisted by Humala Luhut Taruli Gultom, Horas Tampubolon, and Sopan Tarigan, who were eventually appointed as permanent teaching staff.

1974

It was only from 1974 until now that the Department of Agricultural Social Economics was located at Jl. Prof. Dr. Sofyan No. 3, Medan.

1996

In 1996, along with its development, through the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education Number 208/DIKTI/Kep/1996 dated July 11, 1996, the Department of Agricultural Social Economics was separated into two (2) study programs. The developed study programs are the Agribusiness Study Program and the Agricultural Extension and Communication Study Program.

2017

However, in 2017, the nomenclature regarding study programs throughout Indonesia was changed. As a result, the Department of Agricultural Social Economics changed its name to the Undergraduate Program in Agribusiness with two concentrations, agribusiness and agricultural extension.

Ikatan Mahasiswa Sosial Ekonomi Pertanian (IMASEP)

Ikatan Mahasiswa Ekonomi Pertanian (English: Agricultural Social Economics Student Association) of the USU Faculty of Agriculture, abbreviated as IMASEP, was established on October 28, 1980, in Medan, North Sumatra, and has a secretariat at the USU Faculty of Agriculture. IMASEP prioritizes the values of Pancasila with the legal basis of the 1945 Constitution. Based on the Three Pillars of Higher Education, bylaws, and guidelines, IMASEP FP USU aims to realize an academic person who is devoted, has a good personality, and has a national outlook. With a focus on developing soft and hard skills, IMASEP is a forum for USU Undergraduate Program in Agribusiness students to improve professionalism and establish friendships to expand analysis and support diversity in society.
